All my packs are military surplus.... When they get a rip or holes in them, I take them to a tent repair company and they sew patches on them..

I have an 20 year old Old Navy single strap bag similar to this one that I never had a use for and now it's the perfect little rock sack. Not good for much over 15 lbs though. I probably have to upgrade soon, curious what others found success with. I use an old Spalding brand frame pack if it's going to be a small trip (hahahahha). IF the rock spot is within about 50 feet of a parking spot, I like to use bright orange Home Depot pails and our heavy duty wagon. Also keep one around with holes in the bottom if I'm going to the beach, or to use as a strainer once I'm home and washing them off. I forget who said it but someone here said ONLY use a frame pack because it prevents the rocks crashing into your back, and they were 100% right. I carried about 40 pounds of rocks last time out, and my back was OK with it (my shoulders however....)

When I started rockhounding I lived near a military surplus store so began with heavy duty ammo pouches. BUT when I tried dropping rocks over my shoulder into the bag, they usually just ended on the ground behind me. I later began using 5 gallon buckets - they also provide something to sit on. CAUTION: the white buckets deteriorate! Get the black ones! Cloth Shopping bags etc. from thrift stores work well. 20-30 in the back of the pickup are easy to unload.

I love the canvas bag. I really should upgrade from the clothe shopping bag I sling over the shoulder.

I love the canvas bag. I really should upgrade from the clothe shopping bag I sling over the shoulder. It's really not bad, my only complaint is that when I load it up with rocks, it tends to get uncomfortable and I have to shift the weight from shoulder to shoulder or some times I just end up carrying it in front of me like a sack.

I use a belt that has 3 big pouches on it. Two on the side and one in the back. Thats for field sampling when i'm out scouting. I also carry a canvas sack to put bigger pieces in.
