The amount of stupidity it takes to drive a Tesla into that kind of terrain with a child on top of it is stunning. You are a good soul, RWA3006 .
Those people were very lucky you happened by.
I'm not going to lie...this is what I pictured reading what you wrote! Then I reread it! LOL RWA3006 - Good on ya Randy!
It was too early when I wrote that. Only on my first cup of coffee! LOL!

There's a very distinct possibility that I've had WAY too much coffee this morning! LOL

I have this exact magnifying glass and it is great. The battery ran down really quickly. I wonder if I left it ON by mistake at one point. I need to replce it :-)

Always lots of water and a few sandwiches.... That should have been at the top of my list! Perhaps RTH should compile a permanent list stickied somewhere.

Hopefully back the way they came... haha We pulled a minivan out that was stuck in the sand flats in the N.Cadys ... the had absolutely no business having that vehicle in that location.

Hopefully back the way they came... haha We pulled a minivan out that was stuck in the sand flats in the N.Cadys ... the had absolutely no business having that vehicle in that location. Sure, sometimes people forget to bring essential, sometimes life-saving things, but overall, I think the most common form of stupidity is when people overestimate the capabilities of their vehicle. Doh! Have seen that many times out at Ocotillo Wells. And that is an off-road park, with (mostly) graded roads, street signs, the whole ball of wax! Then you get the person who has spent the money on a four-wheel-drive vehicle, but doesn't know how to drive offroad. SMH. In Quartzsite one year, one of their rock club's (Roadrunners?) field trips during the Powwow was south of town, just slightly off of Hwy 95 for bird's-eye rhyolite. I couldn't believe someone thought it appropriate to drive a zero-ground clearance Corvette! They had to park it just off the road, and get a ride in with someone. Doh!!

If I know the area, then I take what I know I need. If I don't know the area, minimum is water, knife, lighter and a compass. I learned the hard way that cell phone in the pocket is a good idea too. For hounding and going in light, a rock pick and maybe a backpack. In the truck will be at least one chisel, sledge, long iron bar, a few shovels, classifier, food, dog bowl, crow bar, jumper cables, spare key, bucket, gold pan, bug spray and boots. Way down the list is anything that goes boom.

Anybody know a good source for a hammer-chisel combo tool? Lowe's, Home Depot, used? Do they vary in hardness or doesn't matter what they're made of as they're all good?

Glad to see someone finally mentioned a firearm . In my long years of backcountry collecting, I've never shot a snake but I've had to draw on two robbers, had an uncomfortable run in with a biker gang, and run across a mobile meth lab in the north Cadys. Never had to fire a shot but man was I happy I was carrying a sidearm. Depending on the area and circumstances ie. fee digs, private property, being out with a large group etc I often do not carry cause lets face it, hauling around a pistol on long hikes can be uncomfortable. But dang, when you are all by yourself or in a very small group in some Godforsaken backwoods or desert camp, Better to have a firearm and not need it than to need it and not have it. Good for signaling too.

You'll definitely have some people saying some are better than others...but if you're not using it "full-time", then I'd recommend just checking "rock hammers" on eBay and going with one in the $20 range. I honestly believe it will do the trick for most "amateur" hounding. Just watch the size and weight...each person's preference is their own...but just be aware there are different sized ones.

Yes on the firearm and snake shot just in case. In most cases though, if you have a spray bottle for cleaning and inspecting the rocks, adjusting it to stream and squirting a snake that doesn't want to leave will get them moving, and never towards the source of the water. We used to see the suicidal ones warming up on the asphalt roads and give them a squirt to save them from getting flattened, they do eat rodents after all.

I've found a small tarp stowed in the truck is handy for creating shade in the desert. I also toss a couple fold up chairs into the back of the truck for comfortable breaks or lunch. Now that I'm older I always make sure to have a few Aleve tablets on me because it can make the outing so much more comfortable and even extend my collecting sessions when the hunting is good.

RWA3006 Love the tips, especially the tarp as I burn almost instantly. How do you secure said tarp?
