I hope you do it and people appreciate you for doing it. There's a list of important projects going on ahead of it but yeah, I'd like to do one. I like the idea of contest structured similar to the Feather River club contest but ... different. I have no specific faults against the club contest other than the pathetic material choices of the past few years. I have reached out to them several times offering material and ideas and assistance especially after the devastating Camp Fire in 2018 but what I got back was mostly crickets chirping. My thought was they might perk up a bit and listen when I explained that ideas are coming from the community who has pretty much dominated their contest over the years but they are very set in their ways I'm doing a test tumble on something I was hoping could be our inaugural contest material but it's honestly not going that great lol. It's been in 60/90 with weekly recharges since the end of February and it's just kind of meh - I think it's too variable on hardness.

TommyRunning a contest is difficult. You are torn between entrant desire for A+++ material and the judges needs for something, anything really that they can use to differentiate entries so as to sort out the winners. They have clearly leaned way far into the shittiest materials they can find. This way any nicely polished piece will win. Suffice to say high quality agates/jaspers are not a good contest material. Everyone will submit nearly perfect results. But shitty stuff is also a poor choice. I did a season with lavic because it’s difficult but doable. All I got was grief. So, i quit.

I'm sure with a little ingenuity, I could make my own trophy. Neighborhood champion. One contestant, me. I win every year.

Does any one know the rules or criteria in judging the 2022 world rock tumbling competition? There is nothing posted on the Feather River web site.

Since you're more limited on time now, are you going to do any pre-shaping before getting them into the tumbler?

Since you're more limited on time now, are you going to do any pre-shaping before getting them into the tumbler? I may be doing it back asswards but I am going to tumble them for a couple weeks and then do some pre-shaping after, Or after-shaping. It makes sense to me...you'll be able to see where the "trouble" areas are definitely going to be doing it that way...

My rocks can in today and they look better than I was expecting, now I better hurry and get to tumbling. Interesting. That almost looks like a batch of completely different rock from what I've seen posted here for the contest (including mine). Some of them look kind of neat; good luck!

Mine was worse than those. Good luck!

I got them in January and tumbled a while before shaping on a flat lap. Good luck!

Clean out today, I’m down to 4 left in course. They should be done next week or the following. The other stones told me not to leave a soldier behind so they will all move on together.

I've got the greater part of mine in what should be a two-week tripoli run. This contest is making me a little nuts (who am I kidding "a little"?).

There is a two stage voting process from what I've read.

The judges chose 7 participants rocks. Do they chose them based on size, color, roundness, shine, pits and cracks or just randomly pick 7.

The judges chose 7 participants rocks. Do they chose them based on size, color, roundness, shine, pits and cracks or just randomly pick 7. 8. During round one, judges will examine all submissions and determine the top seven as finalists.
9. During round two, judges will examine the finalists’ rocks under a hand lens.
10. Judges look for the following: polish left in cracks, flaws in the workmanship (not the rock), coatings or anything that brings out the polish other than the work and wheel marks on the stone. Wheel marks will disqualify the applicant.

If a participant chose 5 ugly rocks 1/2 in size without any pits or cracks and perfectly polished. Do you think they should win?
