I don't think my entry is going to come from this group but just out of curiosity do you guys think that this Saddle Mountain picture wood looks like actual wood or is it just a pretty rock with scenery? Top middle looks like it has some grain, and top left also to a lesser extent. The others don't look very woody to me, but if you think that they do in person, don't let me talk you out of them.

In my own head, I think they're beautiful scenery rocks. I have it stuck in my head that whatever piece "I" come up with has to have the wood grain in it. I have quite a few pieces of pet wood, but I don't know if any are going to be a contender for the contest... My thought for the theme is not that it has to look like real wood. All I really wanted to exclude are pink limb casts, agate / jasper filled limb casts that look absolutely nothing like wood, and any thing else that is a PWINO (pet wood in name only). My personal taste in pet wood is that I like it woody. Since I'm not the judge, however, I don't expect you to care much about my personal taste.

I have probably 3/4 of a LFRB full of tumble size Petrified Wood from Texas...but none of it looks like "wood". So, those aren't even going to be looked at for the contest. I have a large area in my river rock around the house that has all the pet wood I've collected over the last year. Most of it "looks" like wood...but I don't think it will cab well, or it's just a plain looking brown. I think what's going to win this contest is a gorgeous looking pet wood...something along the lines of an Eden Valley Blue Forest Petrified Wood slab that someone's willing to take a cab from...

Have you cut many of your local finds of pet wood to see how the look inside?

If I had any idea where it currently is, I could show you a piece from a saddle mt log that used to sit next to my fireplace masquerating as a piece of firewood, but most of the nicest picture wood looks more like bog. The collection area is pretty huge and the variety is like what you see across the Columbia at the petrified forest park.

Another idea as far as these contest threads go. Wondering if, when we have a theme contest like this with great potential to educate, especially when it comes to material based ones, that creating a companion thread for a lot of the side discussions could prevent it a 20 page thread with 10 entries, plus leave us with some good information that won't be lost when the contest ends. If it contains spoilers for voting, it too can be hidden during voting by Tommy and resurrected afterwards. I have created a petwood thread here forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/98022/petwood-grain-slabbing-effect and I guess if y'all like it and it works for admin it may be worth a shot. As the first one to take a thread far out into the weeds, I ain't judging no one, just acknowledging how these things can go.

Wish I was going to be home in time to join in this. I have some killer teeters ranch sycamore that shows the wood grain with a sagenite overlay.

realrockhound I am interested in seeing the sagenite wood as well. We got a mystery rock years ago that was a petrified wood with sagenite. Rudy at the Rice Museum ID'd the sagenite as aragonite but don't remember the wood species, a slab of it is in their wood display downstairs.

Being a short month and all I'd rather remind you in about two weeks while there is still time to enter a cab in the contest

Nice job lunker! You know you can't use real wood, right? flat spots are terrible. I fight them and lose a lot.

lunker Those are ok, but I've got a lot more variety: I've got poplar... Shagbark hickory.... Chinquapin oak Here's a tip: when you cut them that thin it's harder to stack them in your wood piles. I prefer a more standard 16-20" length, depending on the size of your stove
