Quick question... what type of 4x4 need is there? Would a little Jeep Compass work or would it need more clearance and substantial 4wd system? LOL, 1dave I have been working on my hand dexterity as a mechanic for the last 25 years, I'll take the mitten challenge... do I still get my hammer? Win , thanks for the suggestion. We are currently looking for a second place to stay and trying to decide if we want to get to know one place or have the adventure of two places. Tommy , that cosmos agate looks awesome! Do you have a pic of that crystal ball? The Cedar City location can be accessed by almost any vehicle. The Jeep Compass should be fine. Lynn

If you head south, Burro creek is a good area. There's a fairly good chance I'll be out there twice in the next month or so, and trying to find the palm stump area slightly to the south. Straight North on the way to Tonopah on US95 is the honor system fee dig for chalcedony at Gemfield, and if you are into such things, the car forest and art cars a little to the north in Goldfield are quite entertaining, along with the wild burros. In Tonopah you can always do the turqoise tour if available with the Ottesons and get a few minutes in their lightly salted tailings. The pizza place is pretty good too. www.gemfieldnv.com/gemfield-nevada-photo-album.html

Another nice place is the picasso marble location North of CC. You'd need to make plans how to get your rocks back home.

It doesn't take much to put a smile on my face, but an agate field sound like it might easily do it! I have looked into my crystal ball and I foresee some Cosmo agate in your near future Lordy, this makes me want to plan another trip to Utah Tommy, Those are great examples of Cedar City agate. You're a real rock hound dog! You seem to find the good stuff wherever you hound. Lynn Edit -I thought by quoting you, we'd see your pix in my quote. Not so.

Thanks Lynn I wish I could take credit for it but I found this piece as a result of your direct guidance in showing me what to look for. I think most of the group had gone back to the vehicles at that point in time

Alright, I have spent the last two months getting ready for the trip and eyeing through all the links people provided in this thread. I really appreciate all of the help and information from the awesome folks at RTH! We have decided to spend all of our time in one place and branch out from there, rather than having to take a day to pack up and move locations, we will have that time to continue to explore the beauty of the area more. We have a place to stay in Cedar City for the week. We are leaving a week from today. We fly out to Vegas next Friday, stay the night and head up to Utah on Saturday (our anniversary). We are planning a couple days for Zion, a day to explore Cedar City and the surrounding area, a day or two for Bryce Canyon and a rockhounding day or two. I think we will have an extra day to pick something or plan for a rain day(do those happen very often this time of year?). zarguy, I will have a day to go looking for those smiles in that field you were talking about earlier in this thread. If you had time to go out that would be an extra special experience for me. I really do love meeting the folks behind the computer, at least in this cool forum. Funny, this is the first forum that has compelled me to go out and meet the strangers I am talking to, such good people here. I would like to thank 1dave, zarguy, Tommy, RWA3006, Rockoonz, hypodactylus and Win you have all made it so much easier to pick some of the awesome things to do and see to utilize our time best while there, it can be overwhelming in a place that has so much to offer. If anyone wants to share any of their rock spots I would be forever grateful. I will also send some Wi/Mi rocks as a trade for the information, when I get back from vacation. I can take those rock spot tips in PM and only let the secrets out if you say it's OK to do so. Thanks again for all of the help! I lurk on the site daily, but don't add much because I guess I'm just more of an observer in larger groups, but I'm a talker one on one.

That's great you're coming out and you can't go wrong with the RTH crowd guiding you. Have a nice trip and we will want a report and photos when you get back! I'd come down to meet you but just had knee replacement and am grounded for a while.

I can help you with Southern Nevada around Las Vegas. Have not done any rock hounding in Utah and very little in Arizona.

I'd come down to meet you but just had knee replacement and am grounded for a while. My step dad just had one of his knees replaced this winter. He was a cripple with his bum knee and couldn't walk much further than the garage to house. He's almost 6 months in and doing most normal things now, but still hasn't gotten to 90 degrees and doesn't have hope to do that. He's in less pain and said he was happy he finally did it although the rehab was a bit rough. When did you get yours done? How has the healing been going?

I am always in awe of the stuff you find and cut open, very impressive! We are only spending the initial night and departing night in Vegas. We do plan on taking a long weekend or so to check out the Nevada area a bit in the near future. It's not too far of a flight after all.

I hope you have many years of great service from that new knee! It's crazy that they had my step dad moving his knee when he came out of surgery and walking before he left the hospital. Did they use glue to fuse your new knee to the bone?

Well if you ever get back to Nevada give me a heads up before you get here. I know some great areas all throughout Nevada.

Did they use glue to fuse your new knee to the bone? Yep, they just glued titanium caps onto the ends of the long bones, then glued the insision and pushed me out the door. Lucky to have access to this modern technology.

I should be around, will you be renting an SUV, able to go a bit off road? My offer for the PW is still good. If you're day tripping to Zion and arriving after 8 AM, you'll need to park outside the park. Parking ranges from $20-$30/day and you'll take the free town shuttle to the park. Once inside you take the free Zion shuttle into the Main Canyon's scenic drive. They run frequently and you get off and on at any of the stops. Do a little research to see what you might want to experience in Zion. Angel's Landing (permit required) and The Narrows are the two favorite hikes for visitors. My wife and I love the East Side of the park, no shuttle and many pullouts to park and explore, take photos. This is the best site for information, reach out to me with any questions: citrusmilo.com/zionguide/Also, not far from Cedar City is the Kolob Canyons unit of Zion. A beautiful scenic drive, the short Timber Creek Trail at the end of the scenic drive is great. A really nice day could be spent driving I-15 to Parowan and visiting the Parowan Gap Petroglyph site, nearby are some dinosaur tracks. From there take Rt 143 through Brianhead ski resort and stop at the road to Brianhead Peak to collect some agate, I can PM you info if interested. Next would be visiting Cedar Breaks N.M, several viewpoints and some short hikes. The Visitor Center is closed for renovations. There was still some snow last week, may have melted by your visit. Continue down and go back to Cedar City or take a short detour to Navajo Lake. Duck Creek Village is nearby and Aunt Sue's is good for a meal. Sorry if this seems confusing, take a look at maps on line or paper and it will make sense. PM me any ??.

I think it should be able to go off the road a bit, just not very far... I'll get the insurance:) Thanks a bunch for the link to the Citrusmilo site, we used it a ton for planning the Zion area of the trip. WOW, thanks for the continued information as well, it's very helpful. Those are some really great suggestions for getting around to see the sights... seems like there's endless sites to see there as well! How free are you through the week? I believe we are thinking about hitting the Zion area early in the week. If it could work out, I would enjoy meeting you and looking for some pet wood!

I don't think I have anything planned, we can certainly get together at some point. The Compass should be fine for my area, we'll find out. If we go for PW it should take us around two hours total.
