Thanks Quartz! I'm actually beyond stoked about this box! I know she's got some other rocks she that wouldn't fit in the box...but I don't know what they are for sure. I'm not too sure they'd beat out the Obsidian though! LOL Wow jasoninsd , great gift, but wait, there's more! Thanks Don! I'm dying to know what she picked up...

You lucky dog! Do you want to share your sister with me? Where is she getting that Velvet Obsidian from? I already inquired about her marital status -- given her rock-solid priorities and spectacular taste in obsidian. Then I remembered that I'm already married. I hate it when that happens.

I'll let her know her admirers are growing! LOL

Woot, excited to see those pics. We cut some gray banded obsidian a couple weeks ago, maybe there's a skill to it, it was pretty flat black. I'll have to ride shotgun and see how you do. Thank you! It's good to be back and to see what you and the gang are up to. Burnout is real. My friend showed me a rock and suddenly I was 30 miles down the road on gravel and back into it. This year I'll be bringing home fewer rocks and overloading myself less. .

This year I'll be bringing home fewer rocks and overloading myself less. . I noticed the last couple times I went out hounding, I was pretty selective on what went into the backpack...there's FAR too many Leaverites out there! LOL I was doing a lot of reading/research last night about cutting Obsidian with sheen. There's a bunch of different theories people have on the correct cutting angle in relation to the layers. I've read some say 45 degrees...others say parallel with the banding...others say 2-3 degrees off parallel. Of course this is regarding "sheen" Obsidian. When it comes to the gray banded, I think cutting perpendicular to the banding works for that type of material (I could be wrong on that...). I do believe that second picture is Rainbow Obsidian rather than Royal Velvet. I finally spoke to my sister yesterday and she said there had been a "mix" of Obsidian in the box...

Makes sense on angling. I would think the idea around cutting banded would be similar to Biggs Jasper, cutting with angle on the banding so the bands spread out more. It's hard to put that in words, but maybe it makes sense:)

I've done that before with some Silver Lace Onyx that was just boring bands. I wanted to see what would happen...and it did elongate the bands.
