Hey folks, we are putting together a trip to Yellowstone NP From central Oregon. I have to drive by some sweet spots like Succor Crk and Graveyard Pt. Are there other "don't miss" spots on the way or around the park? Obvi. It within park... curious to hear!

I did a google maps route from Ontario ID (assuming you hit the freeway) to Yellowstone. You would hit/pass by all kinds of cool spots.

You are about 3 hours from Billings if you are in the park. I wouldn't fool with anything upriver from there. It seems that the further east you go on the river, the better the agates seem to be.

Does anyone have much info about Stinkingwater? What specifically do you want to know? I love the pet wood from that area. Would like to know how accessible it is by 4x4 and if there's a marked area for collection. If not, is the digging trial and error and dumb luck? I do have my GT book and Rockhounding OR, so I'm hoping that info is still relevant. I realize rocks don't move but perhaps the regulations do sometimes! Thanks for looking up the BLM link phixer.

I realize rocks don't move but perhaps the regulations do sometimes! Thanks for looking up the BLM link phixer. It’s been a minute since I’ve been back in there. Should easily be accessible by 4x4. If you head east from burns, it literally on the way on the right hand side of the road after you clear stinking water pass. From what I remember, most of the wood was on a hillside, however that doesn’t mean it’s not deposited around. The digging is very tough. I’ve personally never done trial by error digging. Normally scout until I see a piece sticking up, then dig exposing it.

realrockhound thanks for the info. I rechecked the Gem Trails today and I'm not sure this shouldn't be it's own trip... but I hate to drive by twice and not go. Some easier and smaller spots I might be able to get into like Beulah Rez or Warm Springs Rez perhaps. I purchased the Gem Trails of Idaho and W Montana today, would like to see what can be found in those areas and legally collected. Keep the ideas coming folks, this is sure to be a busy trip!

There is some ridiculously awesome jasper which supposedly sources from Livingston. I just have not been able to find any there and come to think of it, have not found any period for a number of years.

We have been lucky and hit a few nice spots, headed to Yellowstone Park, from Livingston - stopping at the gravel bars when showing (usually August)..

I used to find it all the way to Glendive. I talked to a lady who was making jewelry out of it and she told me that it was coming down from Livingston. The steakhouse there, by the way, is wonderful.

Hey y'all I dropped off the earth after this beautiful, exciting and transformative trip to Yellowstone. It was a freakin' blast. I will post some pics. We were so busy in the park we did not really rock hound. On the way home we went to Craters of the Moon NM. The tree impressions left on cooling lava are so cool. I'll post the pix here shortly.
