quartzilla Man they had some of this material same place I picked up the pet wood but everything was in huge chunks, more than I was willing to play around with. One flavor was like a burnt caramel color with all sorts of sweet patterns, should've taken a shot. I'm excited to see how yours turns out, maybe they'll have more down the road

We should for sure find some loose ones but I got my hard rock digging gear so may go for pockets. Never been to this site but it is well known. I will try to remember to get pics of the site too…. Unless I’m too excited!

quartzilla Pretty neat, did you guys just pick that place at random? . Lumberlegs this spot is in all the California rockhounding guides. Called by various names including Deep Springs and Big Pine. Not far from the Bristol Cone Pine Forest. The drive over the mountain and thru the canyon getting there was spectacular. I’m really kicking myself for not pulling over to get pics of the rock formations. Everyone here would enjoy seeing it.

If it's anything like the California I got to experience, I'll throw a kick your way .
That state is amazing

My Dad shot me this pic, what a killer find Initial guess it that it's two different types of lava flow stacked on top of each other rewdownunder, vegasjames, 1dave, or anyone else, what do you guys think is going on here?

It looks like an obsidian flow that got rained on, the additional water turning the top part into perlite. A different change: Glassbutte Oregon

A different change: Glassbutte Oregon I tried to enlarge the pic but it blurred a little too much. From what I can make out though, I would guess that the lighter area is diorite and the darker area looks like metarhyolite. Rhyolites form from viscous, high silica lava flows. Therefore. the lava could have flowed over the diorite solidifying in to the metarhyolite.
