What type of camera do you use for photographing your rocks?

I don't have any kind of professional macro camera. I find that my Pixel 4a Android phone using portrait mode gets some pretty good close-ups.

I personally think that most cameras will work fine for most people. Basic point/shoot and cell phone cameras are pretty good these days.
What you really need to consider is your lighting; poor light with an expensive camera will still produce a lackluster image.
Don't get me wrong; there are definite advantages to fancy cameras and lenses. If you are simply looking to take nice photos, you won't need a $1000 camera with a $1000 lens. However, if you are interested in photography as a hobby; it is a whole different discussion.

Timv, I use my iPhone and add quality light and a camera/phone mount as two necessary additions. My background is usually white but you must look at different backgrounds and find the one you like. My setup is shown in one of my replies to 1dave on turtleback agates this week.

It depends on how the pictures are being used. If the pictures are being used to sell something a good camera is important. I just upgraded my ten year old $250 digital camera to a $1500 camera body. I take pictures of cabs in natural light and the picture quality varies with time of day and day of the year. Basic photoshop is inadequate fixing bad pictures. I bought an expensive macro lens for my camera about a year ago and it does an infinitely better job with my new camera than the older one.

My Olympus TG-5 is still holding out after 4 years and countless adventures/photos/videos. Being 'waterproof' helps when I inevitably want to take photos/videos in a hurricane/rainstorm (happens more often than you would think). It is great with close-ups-not great at distance. Went out with my coworkers last week, snapped a few quick photos in crazy light. Even I am surprised they came out so well.

I use my iPhone, not sure if my pics are that great. I haven’t tried to get on the pic site for here. Is it ok to name my Instagram account, to see my pics?

I use a Kodak digital I have had since 2006. I also have an iPhone XR. It undoubtably has a much higher resolution, but I don't use it because transferring photos from of it can be a real pain at times.

I use a Nikon Coolpix S3500 that I've had it for several years now. But, I have to agree with the others, lighting is very important.
