Went to Prescott AZ to pick up the Frantom 24" slab saw I bought from the Market Place section. What's so great about Prescott? It's literally knocking on the door of Burro Creek.
Scheduled enough time off to cover at least 1 day of rockhounding.
Get to Chino Valley/Prescott and meet up with Vince & Robin ( @hummingbirdstones2 & hummingbirdstones) and follow them to Nueral's house to get the saw. Chit chatted a little after the saw was loaded, Vince & Robin gifted me a few nice chunks of AZ rainbow pet wood in case I couldn't make it to Dobell Ranch. Chatted with Neural for a bit and headed out to the campground.
Google maps took me through Skull Valley. Found a spot with some agate float and partook of a little pre-rockhounding rockhounding.
Little over an hour got me through the tight, winding mountain roads to campsite. I noticed I only had a 1/4 tank of gas, no cell signal and loosing daylight. Off I went in search for gas towards Wickenburg. Spent the night and grabbed some chow and made arrangements to meet Lee ( Rockoonz) at the campground around 7.
Lee shows up and we start talking, TWICE we said we could talk and pick rocks but it wasn't until the 3rd time we actually headed that way. Followed Lee to where he & the club hounded prior to my visit. Driving on that road ain't for the faint of heart.
10-12 miles off the main road I near had a heart attack. We were driving through an enormous agate field. We park and I couldn't stop looking. EVERYWHERE was agate and jasper nodules. I filled up a sandbag with tumble rough within 20 feet of my truck.
We noticed some darker blue agates on the way in and worked our way up to the top of the hill where the agate field started but the better stuff had petered out.
While we were chatting a truck pulled up and stopped and soon after a Jeep followed. Turned out to be Diane ( drocknut), Frank (frankwitte), Russ ( nowyo) and his wife. Talked for a few and we all eventually ended up at their campsite. Hung out for a few hours before I headed out towards home. Spent the night in Ash Fork and woke up to snow to start the ride home. I was originally going to swing by Dobell's but opted to pass due to the weather. Rain & snow until half way through New Mexico, 2 dust storms in NM, 1 dust storm in TX and hit the front of the big storm that rolled in. Fought super strong winds and horizontal rain all through OK into Arkansas. Finally pulled over in AR for a nap and raced the weather front the rest of the way home.
Gran total for the trip is 1 Frantom 24" slab saw affectionately referred to as Magnus Porcus, easily 500-600 lbs of pastellite Jasper and agate, great memories of meeting some of the nicest & generous people who are members of our forum and a whopping 4098 miles on the odometer. And 1 hell of a story.
