Noticed some bright red landscape stones at a local fast food joint, so I went back and checked them out today. Quite the patterns for filler rock. Anyone have any insight on what this is or where it may have been sourced? More curious than anything. I would wager it's not from Michigan.
It doesn't scratch with a nail. Something like a jasper, perhaps? Reminds me of Ohio flint as well, though I've only ever had my hand on one piece.

Test the hardness, I don't think they are a Jasper, in fact they may be man made if I remember correctly. I have seen them a couple of times being used as landscape mulch as well.

I did test it with a nail and it didn't' scratch. Hopefully at the end of the week, I'll see how they turned out.

Son Of BeachMaybe you could ask the mgr about where the landscape rock came from. Sometimes the get new rock periodically to refresh the landscape. You could contact that company that did the work

Son Of Beach Maybe you could ask the mgr about where the landscape rock came from. Sometimes the get new rock periodically to refresh the landscape. You could contact that company that did the work I had thought of doing just that had it turned out well! Unfortunately, it's on the soft side...reminds me of some mookite I tried to tumble. I put it with my sanskrit jasper, I think they are close to the same hardness. It's pretty, but I don't think it will shine. I might still follow up out of curiosity.
