Robin and I got some of this brecciated/conglomerate jasper with rootbeer colored opal in with a parcel of Skaggs. This material was said to be from the same general area, and produced some great cabs. Had to cut "between the cracks" and try to miss the voids in the white areas, but it polished up beautifully after that.
This was said to be mined out when we got it ten years ago, and we never knew where it originated. Does anyone here know the source?

If I’m not mistaken, that’s the stuff they started uncovering under where the Skaggs was mined. Shirley quant (who originally mined Skaggs), grandson was selling very similar material last year at the prineville powwow. He was saying the green brecciated stuff came from a layer under where the Skaggs was found. Being a green brecciated conglomerate would make sense in this case. Looking at the piece more. I actually think I came across some of that stuff at my grandparents place. I’ll keep you posted. My grandpa wrote on everything, so I might have an ID for you in the future.

That would make sense, for sure. This "rootbeer" isn't just greens, but also has fantastic blues in it. Here's a pendant (without much rootbbeer) Robin made.
I'd like to see some of the newer rough. The "family history" makes it even more interesting. As a relative newcomer, I tried to learn as much of the history of who found what, and where up in your area. So many great types of rough have come out of there. Still have files I saved with stories from "the old days".

The ochocos are very odd in the sense that there is material all over those mountains. Some is in the form of deposits, others just random material all across the land. Shirts son, Billy quant is still alive and runs the shop. When I’m home next, I’ll swing by and ask him. He will certainly know if it’s from a deposit in the area.

Thanks for the help. You should probably write a book. Especially with what you said about the Ochocos.
The answer we got when we asked the seller where this came from was "Somewhere between the Owyhees and the Ochocos...".

I'm in agreement! I'm trying to avoid sending all my "what's this?" question to realrockhound since we are in the same area. Yes, a book would be grand.

If you got a question about stuff, feel free to pm me. I don’t mind. I was fortunate enough to be brought up in the hounding rounds and have exposure to so much local material. So I don’t mind helping identify stuff when I can.

I really should go there.

I was there not that long ago inquiring about some plume.

Someone was selling Jumping Jeep at Quartzsite a couple of years ago. After your post about them I wondered if that's who had that booth at Q.
