I've been grinding on an old Beacon Star machine that I equipped with about the cheapest 1"x6" 100 and 220 hard wheels. Just got the Highland Park grinder that someone gave me set up with 8"x2" 80 and 220 hard wheels. What a difference! I was really second guessing about going from the 100 to the 80 as I get quite a bit of chipping with the 100. Time will tell but the 80 doesn't seem to be as chippie as the 100. Now I'm just waiting to get my expanding drum and diamond belts to show up. In the meantime I might also get some decent buffing capabilities. The HP came with a domed disk on each end. I'm going to try carpet on one. I've got quite a bit of speed variables with my setup. A sheave (adjustable pulley) on a 2 speed motor and a 3 step pulley on the machine. The extra real estate on the larger wheels is just amazing. I almost went with 1 1/2" wide but the extra 1/2" was only $15. I thought that was a bargain. Time to bet some preforms cut!
