Thought those familiar with annealing metal might like this. These 1/8" strips of steel are sheared from 5' coil sheet when just cool enough. Used to be individually hot rolled and very soft. Too costly to roll individually. The shearing impact hardens it making it difficult to bend 12 inch rings from. Anneal is necessary. Wood is mostly hot burning oak

I'm no expert...but I'd say you didn't really have too many irons in the fire on that job!

That’s pretty cool jamesp. I’ve heard that a cord of wood has more energy than a ton of dynamite. Was the leaf blower used just to start the fire or to make it hotter?

That's surprising Brent, wow, wood is like slow release dynamite. An average cord weighs 2 to 2.5 tons. The blower was only used to blow the ash off the hill into the pre-wetted forest.

It actually was too many irons, I normally cook half that amount and the wood did fall off on one side and a stack went with it that was poorly annealed. Will re-cook it on the next anneal job. The cost to have it kiln annealed is high.

LOL I thought about you several times on my float trip earlier this week...I kept seeing some amazing pet wood that I couldn't put in the raft...AND I didn't get any pictures of it! LOL - Nothing colorful like the stuff you've been finding...but it still made me think of you.

It was by far the most I ever cooked at one time. Heck, they don't seem to concerned about collecting wood here. May help that they probably don't know it is there ! This Nat Forest has outlaw 4wd trails all over it, more like a 4wd park lol. Maybe you had plenty of water and did not have to drag the boat along. That can make a loooong float trip. You must be in a park or protected area that allows no collecting. Post photos if a camera was brought.

They get bent into 12 and 16 inch rings on a pipe mandrel and serve as middle sections for fire pits.

Hi @blockhead . They get bent into 12 and 16 inch rings on a pipe mandrel and serve as middle sections for fire pits. I would like to see that. The machine shop wanted $20 to bend each ring. Elbow grease is free Matt !
