Probably a learning curve there jamesp 
Hans is amazing.
He used to be on the Ganoksin forum & he first posted the build, step by step on the dragonfly & would happily answer any questions you would ask about technique, etc.
A nice guy who was hounded off the forum - but that's another story.

I think all (most) of his creations have moving parts.
His Palindrome crab has 835 pieces in the cannon alone.
And this is just a hobby on the side- although maybe he sells them- I don't know.

I ran into a guy over on Ganoksin a number of years ago -
Most talented man- he's a fine jeweler by trade & has a hell of an imagination & creates art as well.
His art is a combo of fine jewelry & machine work.
Here's his dragonfly fighter : Check out all the other sculptures as well Jim, jamesp He had a going thread on the jewelry forum about the war between the insects and the dinosaurs .
Pretty cool .

Hans is a genius at making these contraptions. He is one talented man! I have been watching him create these things for years. Perhaps my favorite is the Ptero Bow that actually works. gemfeller is friends with Hans. He also has a site with carving tutorials on it. An amazing jeweler as well. , I should clarify. Meevis's work is indeed impressive. But I am friends with another talented jeweler named Hans: Hans Durstling of Nova Scotia, not Hans Meevis. Hans Durstling specializes in minerals found in the Bay of Fundy region, most self-collected. He has done some very impressive pieces and his jewelry is featured in several major galleries. |

I'd swear I used to follow the work of a Dutch jeweler of that name (I think) who lived in St. Maartins in the Caribbean. Maybe there are 2 of them or my memory's not working eithr. |

A large studio close to to my home in the industrial district create larger scale welded art forms. The studio may be owned and operated by Mellow Mushroom pizza company. Cool Jim, jamesp , I'm thinking there must be a wire armature underneath that, and then everything welded to it.
Not sure if you've ever seen Farm Show (best publication around) but you see metal sculptures in there that people make out of old wrenches, horse shoes, etc, etc. A lot of creative people.
I keep telling Tom we need some BIG metal sculpture in the front yard.
Problem is his welder isn't portable or gas driven, so that means after he welds something up we'd have to move it & we never have gotten a back hoe ( too bad ) & then if course you have to mow around it.
Here's one of my favorite small ones, just goes to show, all you really need is imagination.

Did you guys come up with this wrench grinder Lol ? It has a dynamic flare ! I suppose the category would be welded folk art. Lots of artist attend the Atlanta local art shows that do similar welded works. And many such works are made in Mexico with excellent artistic flare. Some of the sculptures they weld out of steel parts at the studio up the road are 10 to 12 feet tall and must weigh several tons. They must use over a 100 pounds of welding rod per sculpture.    |

I guess that's one nice thing (maybe one of the only) of living in a metro area, lots of culture & art shows.
When we lived near Asheville NC we enjoyed that aspect very much- too bad the real estate was too pricey.

When we lived near Asheville NC we enjoyed that aspect very much- too bad the real estate was too pricey. Patty There at the Fulton County industrial district is about 3 large warehouses where this art is produced. It must be the Mellow Mushroom pizza company's property judging from the amount of mushroom sculptures. Their pizza houses are loaded with sculptures created from many different materials. The owner has a farm near my place where they grow a lot of their foods. They are an eclectic bunch with too many profits lol. They can be seen driving some very unique stretch vehicles. Their interest in welding must be a deep one. Asheville is rivaled by few in sheer beauty. Bet it is expensive there. You were fortunate to live there. |

Ahh Asheville was a nice area, we had a 10 year run there as renters.
Real Estate was too steep for our pocket, so we moved south.

Missed replying to you. If you got to do a 10 year stint in Asheville you guys are fortunate. That is a beautiful spot. Still rather be in Florida though. The variety of dragonflies is off the chart down there ! Check out the dragonfly buttocks   This type is super shy  |
