I found this rock in my yard, in western MA. Being new to all of this, I did some basic research but came up with nothing close. Not sure if I should tumble it or leave it as is. One dry, same side wet. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the info. I'm in western Mass, not WA. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge in this area. When I found this rock, it really sparked an interest in learning more about rocks and minerals in general. I've got huge chunks of granite and quartz and alot of other stuff I will be trying to identify.

Hi! I collected some rocks from the Oregon coast last year that looked just like that one. I researched online and decided they were basalt with plagioclase crystals, Hopefully someone else who is more knowledgable can chime in and determine whether that's correct!

Yes, generally speaking it's porphyry and from that webpage it looks like the feldspar porphyry. So perhaps it's basalt and feldspar crystals.

Plagioclase crystals in basalt. Here is an example in a a suspected meteorite of what is referred to as plane preferred plagioclase, or preferred orientation plagioclase. These are plagioclase crystals that formed while the basalt was still molten and therefore the plagioclase crystals started to settle out in the melt in the bottom of the magma chamber.

You can tumble it, and some pieces will take a modest shine, and others will not. Pulled my rough from the banks of the CT River in MA. Some similar finished pieces in my Snakes and Stones Thread photos #169, 172, and 234.
