I was using water on a diamond bladed drag saw and it sort of worked with the softer materials, but when i got some harder materials it would stop cutting real quick, I switched to using diesel and it cuts like a champ. I know a number of high volume cutters that use diesel. some add oil some don't, they don't get in hurry to open the saws tho.
Perseverance at its finest. Love the survival style sled you made.
I could have walked hours in those small hills. It looks like a beautiful area.
I have walked for hours in those hills and wish that I still could, now I go back and look at the photo's that I took and remember the good times we had there. I am glad I carried a camera with me all the time. It is good to remember!
Ah, an oven to cook the oil out of the sawn rock. A month or two of summer Georgia sunshine on a black rubber mat works here lol.
Diesel cooks out pretty good if left in the sun, but i have enough laying around as it is and like to keep moving the process along a bit quicker. Have to be careful with some material as heat will change it, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.
Knowing the long limb piece is Stinking Water is really helpful. Had never seen one from there in person, but have some limbs from Virgin Valley here. Now I'll be more open minded when I see limbs in the future.
Small limbs are rarely found at stinking water, this one I found well outside of the normal digging area, It eroded out of a piece of what we call bog wood that probably formed at the bottom of a small lake. We brought home a large piece and after ten years on the surface it stared to fall apart and this was hidden on the inside.
I placed the polished end of this small piece of Eden valley Petrified wood in bleach for two days. Not as good a result as I was hoping but it did get better. Maybe longer would help.
On an oak round? Did you do a video of a Stinking Water oak a while back?
I don't mind guessing wrong on something like this. There's pet wood all over the world, and more just in this country than I could ever remember.
Yes a number of Oak rounds on video, the Blue one is Hubbard Basin, the small long one is from Stinking Water as is the Oak slab. The white and brown one is from from the Blue Forest in Wy, and is is a partial cast with the brown area being pet wood.
Sounds like New Jersey. Went out last week to check out a few places I scooped out on google Earth and everywhere I went there were no trespassing signs post al over.
Yeah, it's hard to imagine with how big Texas is that there isnt large swaths of land open to the public. And sad that many of the best fee based rockhounding private ranches have closed to the public. So it's a GOOD thing that this site exists so can get our fill of looking at awesome rocks and the creations of the amazing artists that are members here!
OXmap.com program show all property ownership, both private and public, well worth the cost if you get out a lot.
We carried a 200 lb chunk about a mile down that creek bed. used a burlap sack and two rakes to make a litter. One old man, one wife, one strong 16 year old kid and one friend with bad knee.

rocknrob: There was a shop in Portland, don't know if it's still there called Kenny and Zukes who made the absolute best pastrami sandwiches I have ever had. The problem is every restaurant thinks their sandwich is worth $20 now and seldom makes the grade.

rocknrob: So, to end my thread on sandwiches. If you find your sandwich worthy of that price by all means keep going to that restaurant
