Thanks everyone for the kind welcomes.
I started in July of this year when my family took an RV trip to Gatlinburg TN. We stayed at a park near a creek and that’s about all she wrote. I found my first piece of quartz and a lot of pretty rocks.
I have a tumbler and have been cleaning rocks and tumbled some. I really want to get the cleaning process down and the sorting of rocks by their hardness.
My biggest challenge right now is figuring I’d I can get the black stuff off of my quartz or leave it because it’s another part. I can upload a picture but can’t figure it out.
Thanks again Benita

Thanks again Benita This made me chuckle...not in a "poking fun at you" kind of way! Check out the rocks we have here in South Dakota in the following thread. Pretty much every "white" rock you see on the hillsides is quartz: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/100255/fairburn-calling-me-againIf you haven't seen this link yet, it might help with sorting out the rocks by hardness: www.nps.gov/articles/mohs-hardness-scale.htmAs far as the "black" on the quartz, maybe give Iron Out a shot. It might help with the cleanup.

Thanks again Benita Benita here is the tutorial for uploading photos via Cloudinary. Follow the directions EXACTLY (it takes a little while), but then it's all easy peasy and works like a charm.

Thanks again Benita What I do to clean my rocks is load them into the tumbler, add 2 or 3 tablespoons of Borax, and either some Shaved Zote Bar laundry soap or about a teaspoon of dawn dish soap. Basically Borax and some kinda soap, fill the barrel with water, and let them tumble for a few hours to overnight. Does wonders even on rock I had already scrubbed with soap and a toothbrush.
