Hi,
What is cabbing?
I did some looking and searching on the net and as near as I can tell it is like shaping the rocks etc.....right?
How do you cab them?
Bunny
PS-I just coudn't wait any longer and peeked at my first batch of rocks I am tumbling, put them in on monday night.....they are looking alot smoother then when I put them in there. How do I tell when they are ready for the next step of girt?

Cabbing, or cabachon cutting is essentially making domed shapes out of stone. Cabachet is is using the natural shape and grinding it flat on the sides. Any stone can be cabbed, and some are better than others. Turquoise is like sanding plaster of paris to shape. Cabbing makes a boundary to set the stone is a piece of jewelery. This makes the bezel more manageable and more aesthetic.

Cabbing is usualy (or allways?) done by hand on a grinding wheel and /or Lap machine. It makes a very defined shape. What are you tumbling? Think in these terms: Is this the final shape I want them to be? Coarse grind shapes, everything else is intened to go toward the final polish, gaining smoothness with each step. Shape until you are happy with the rounded edges, then move on. That's the best explanation I can come up with. Hope that helps.
