I am soooooo happy I found this board today ;D I have been reading the Vendors posts....and I have to give myself a small pat on the back, if I do say so myself I have been doing alot of research before I have purchased ANYTHING during this whole process. And when it was time to buy my grits and polishes....I did the same thing. Search eBay and then Google the product to see what other suppliers are out there. I purchased my first grits and polishes just yesterday....from The Rock Shed!!!! In fact, their "links" page is how I found you guy I bought the 5 pound Kit (4 pounds grit/polish and 1 pound plastic pellets), 1/2 pound Tin Oxide polish, 1 pound Tripoli, and 1 pound Ceramic Medium and with shipping the total was only $39.99 From what I am reading on the Vendor page...I think I did my research right and found one of the best prices for my material. Am I right? I think I am going to have to purchase a 'real' tumbler. Is this something any of you ever sell used?? Or do you keep your old ones to just do more rocks?? I have seen used ones on Ebay.....would you recommend me getting a brand new one?? I probably won't be doing more than a few pounds every few months at the most. Very little from what I read from you guys...LOL!!! Anyway, just a few more comments and questions....hope you aren't sick of me already!! Brenda

Corndog. To be honest, an used tumbler might be a star or My first tumbler was used untill I cannibalized it for parts for other tumblers of the same model I got later. It does sound like you got good prices on grit. I use either Indian Jewelers Supply, or Rio Grande. I really like Loretone products. They have been good for me. I suggest getting a new one unless you really find a star. The greatest of luck, success and good tumbling. Welcome aboard, you will meet some colourful folks here.

hey, Corndog!
yeh, get a new tumbler, if you don't like it at the end of the day you know where to re-sell in it (in a NY minute!).
If you don't want to go the $65 bucks or so on the Lortone and have a Harbor Freight Store near you, get a Chicago Electric for $30 bucks and try that for a while...
again, if you don't like it, post it in here and someone will take it off your hands, i'm sure.
OR, get brave and build your own.....lots of tip and experience in here...
welcome to the board, KD

Hi CornDogs and welcome!! I'd got for a new Lortone. For a "newbie" I know you will have enough problems tumbling and don't need a used tumbler to give you more grief. It's hard for an experienced "tumbler" to judge if a used tumbler is good or bad buying on the web,, site unseen (other then pictures). Good luck and have fun!! Tom

I have a homemade tumbler with purchased barrels and I love it. Don't feel back about not doing tons of rock...I do small loads myself and the joy I derive for it is just as profound, I'm sure, as anyone elses. and the rockshed is aces. Welcome.

Hi Brenda, Definitely, get a new one. Check out JATAYU in the vendors section, they have good prices on Lortones. I got a used one on ebay and it turned out that the barrel was no good so had to buy new stuff right away anyhow. Welcome to the forum!

CORNDOG (love that name, love that food. It's just fun to say, isn't it ? CORNDOG) ;D Anyway, Hello and welcome. I would be one of those "colorful" characters. I tend to sing the praises of the vibratory models. They move fast and you start with 120/220 instead of 60/90. But it's all I'vever used, so that's just me. Good luck! cookie

Hey corndog, I did the same thing you did by researching everything first, and then buying grit from the rockshed as well. Only i just bought grit by the pounds instead of in a grit pack. You should get some rough from them too, I think they have the best prices or close to it.
Also, I followed Cher's advice and bought a new 33B from Jatayu, like she recommended. Best prices and shipping for a new tumbler. I also got a used 3A from ebay and it is alright.
And also, right now you think you will do a few pounds a month, but wait until you get started!! Then you'll want to be doing a few pounds a week! ;D ;D But it's ok, you can never have enough rocks huh?

Hello and welcome Brenda ;D You did great by reading the postings and buying from a recomended seller. Sometimes it is better to spend a few dollars more and buy from a vendor with a good reputation than waiting for a package from a "bargain" store, that never arrives. My recomendation will be to buy a new tumbler to avoid any headaches. Happy Tumbling!

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Just wait til you take that first batch out! May not even take that long! If you love rocks like we love rocks, you WILL want to tumble more than just a few pounds every few months!
Soon you will be like the rest of us - hopelessly addicted to rocks and aways wanting MORE! More rocks, more tumblers, a saw, a grinder, a Dremel tool, and it goes on and on! ;D
