HI THERE!! I know I mentioned that I started a small batch of rubies in my 'toy' rock tumbler and the little bag of grit that comes with the kit on Saturday - it has been almost 48 hours. I also know that everyone says I have to be patient. But, here is my question and why I need some advice ASAP.... The pieces that I am doing are between 1 caret and 10 carets.....TINY PIECES!!!!! The barrel is about 2/3 full and I poured in the package of grit and filled it to just over the top of the rocks with water. There has been no leakage and things are moving along well.....in fact, I think they may need to come out already!!! I don't want to leave them in there too long to grind away to nothing, right? I am wondering because the pieces I am doing are so small....could it really only take 48 hours to go through the first grit cycle??? I have more questions about how much grit/water to use - but I will do that in another thread when I get my shipment of real grit. THANKS EVERYONE!!! Bren

I know nothing about rubies, have never tumbled them but It's ok for you to open them up and look at them. I'm wondering though, I think maybe you used a bit too much water. I thought the water was supposed to be just below the tops of the rocks. Hang on, someone else will be along soon to verify that but it is perfectly ok to open it and check them. You can take out any that you think are tumbled enough. If you do look at them, just be sure to clean the lid and top of the barrel really good when closing it back up. A toothbrush works great for cleaning it.
