I was looking at grit and polish at The Rock Shed’s website and saw something called Tripoli Pre-Polish. It says it is sometimes used as a pre-polish in rotary tumblers in the description. What exactly is this product for? How does one know when to use it? Would an extra step in the process be worth it?

I've been using tripoli with leather scraps for cushioning as final polish for over 20 years in rotary tumblers. As mentioned in the link above, you may neeed to let it run a little longer, but you will get good results. My tumbed rock quality has drawn compliment from several people with a great deal more experience than I, and from one person who sells big volumes all over the country. Give a try, if you don't like it the experience is worth it.

dillonf, all of the stuff I've cut up for cushioning has been purses, shoes, and anything else of a fairly substantial thickness leather obtained at local garage/estate sales. Split leather doesn't work well, doesn't hold up to the beating. Some people don't like using it as it does get a little slimey, mostly just uncomfortable to the touch as expressed by some who have tried it.

I go to a second hand store where I could nab some old shoes at a decent price - just have to make sure I don't get fooled by fake leather!!
