I have 2 Lortone 16" vibra laps. I like them but they're messy. What I really want is a flat lap (reciprolap?) with the bar that divides the surface of the pan & moves the rocks over the grit instead.

The biggest thing is they need to be babysat a little bit more than I like, even though it’s not usually an issue for me. I can polish fairly large pieces with minimal labor though, which I like. I would look for one with a couple pans so you can have one for polish and two for grit then run one pan while the other is preloaded with grit for swapping out. Then it can grind away while you clean & refill the other.

Also before you use the machine, put a level across the middle of your pans to make sure they're flat. Uneven pans = uneven polish. If you need tubing for a bumper ring (along the inside edge of the entire pan), go to Home Depot. They sell tubing for refrigerator ice makers that's about the right size & stiffness; I think I paid $14 for 25 feet of it the other day. I've also read that duct tape is the best for covering the rock edges before grinding and I'm going to give that a try (using rubber tubing or rubber bands around rocks is really fiddly).

I really appreciate you sharing this helpful info with me. Unfortunately my seller backed out of the deal. Pretty disappointing. I will keep shopping and hopefully will be able to use your great suggestions soon.

Well I'm likely getting rid of mine soon (got a great deal on a Richardson's polisher) if you're anywhere near Canada
