I guess you could say it all started with dabbling in petrified wood and agate with close friends, innocently enough.... sometimes I'd find it and share, sometimes them, but we always kept it as a social thing. "I can stop any time" was a common phrase in our circle.. Ok, truthfully.... Years ago I found myself driving to Utah for the Dugway geode beds and while this wasn't a significant event in my journey what happened after certainly was. A friend had me bring over my geodes because he had a tile saw, and we had a BLAST cutting them open. Then, a few months later, that same friend invited me to his dad's house, as a family friend had left his "rock grinder" in their garage. We spent the entire day grinding geodes and attempting to polish them with little instruction and even less know-how. That was one of the best days of my life. For the next 15 years I continued to rockhound around, always feeling that deep desire to "grind" again- it was unshakable. Visceral. Palpable. Finally, last year, I bought a Cabking (and I recently found a Lortone LS12 slab saw) so now I can use my "big boy goggles" when I go look for rocks, no longer limited to what is already tumbled and small:) I've lived in Idaho all my life and enjoy getting out as often as possible- up, down, left or right. My all-time favorites are my local jaspers, but I adore petrified wood, coprolite, star garnet, smokey quartz, and just about anything else I can go find with friends. Speaking of friends... I'm genuinely stoked to be here- after lurking for the last few months I'm pretty confident I found my people, so, thank you for having me! Patrick

Welcome from Northern Arizona, Patrick! You are now surrounded by your enablers. BTW, you don't sound so ornery to me!

Such a tragic story.... good thing you found us to help you along. But, seeing how we're just as bad, that help may not be so helpful. LOL!

Welcome from Rochester!
I'm trailing you in the addiction - I've only gotten started recently. I haven't hit rock bottom yet, but I'm enjoying the fall! Congrats on the new equipment, and post pics of your setup when you get a chance!

Cool story. Glad you're here and hope to see some of your projects at some point. North or south Idaho, if you don't mind? They are such different areas. I've always hoped to find myself in north Idaho at some point. My family so far is keeping me over towards the west coast. My absolute favorite petrified wood is from the Hells Canyon Snake River area in southern Idaho. Gorgeous herringbone petrified Sequoia.

Thank you all!! I'm stoked to figure all this out- mainly, posting pictures and replying to specific people on threads. I'll get it soon enough but appreciate your patience while I learn. Robin, I used to fit the bill perfectly (accordingly to my grandma) but I think I've calmed down in my old age:) Khara, I'm in Boise (the best part;) I saw a post where you mentioned your herringbone wood but I think the pics had expired as the thread was a couple years old. I'm just a few hours from there so tell me if I need to go scouting for the cause...

Looks like you figured out the picture posting already.👍 To tag a specific person, click on their name next to their picture and find their username, copy that and put an @ symbol in front of it, no spaces, and also no punctuation like periods or commas directly next to the name, and this will tag the person. orneryboiUnfortunately the Hells Canyon petrified wood, whatever’s left of it, is all under water due to the dam being built.😭😢😭 There’s a regular Saturday petrified wood thread here that is usually added to every Saturday and I posted some pics on it a few months back. If you go to the last page and scroll backwards you might come to it. A lot of nice wood in that thread in general, and much from the northwest here.
