This is kinda rock related so I'm asking it here and no - not that kind of acid tripping - good grief We are working on acid staining a bathroom concrete floor and we've intensely sanded every inch of it from 50 grit up to 400 grit then back down to 50 because it felt too smooth and the first 'off the shelf' water based product we tried failed miserably. I've got some of the crappy home depot brand 'safer' muriatic that I've used for cleaning rocks but that appears to do nothing so I'd love to get some input on where to get a strong acid product to etch it before using acid based stain on it. Should I be looking for hydrochloric (eta: or phosphoric) acid instead? Has anyone tried this and how did it go?

Thanks Robin that's very interesting. The company I bought the stain from Eagle Products sells this phosphoric acid based product to produce a 'lite etch.' I called them previously and found a very helpful service dept so I'll call them again tomorrow and see what they say about using full strength muriatic acid before using their stain. The reason I think it needs something stronger is the water-based stain we tried literally puddled on the surface with zero absorption and we ended up wiping it all off and going over the whole thing with the 50 grit wet sander again. I do think it needs something to open up the pores but I'll see what they say.

Sorry Tommy, I only know about the other type! Haha that's one thing I never tried in my 'experimental' youth
