Hey y’all! My name’s Ronda, in GA for 25yrs, however I was a migratory bird in my youth and lived all over the place. Originally hail from Philly. I’m a total noob when it comes to rocks. Just got my first tumbler abt to finish up my first batch of mixed rough that came with the NG Pro kit. Santa is bringing me a 6” trim saw ^_^ much excitement abt that! Just went to Hogg Mine after thinking abt it for a decade, hence the need for a trim saw lol. I see where this is going… I have always admired rocks and brought them home as reminders of my outings but never clicked that I could actually “do” stuff with them! I am really kicking myself cause I have lived in some of the most prolific rockhounding places AND we just got back from a summer’s long RV trip across the country and I wanna hit the rewind button!!! 😖 However that trip is what lit the lightbulb over my head, going in the rock shops and touristy places, seeing that they could be more than just rough rocks. I love all the pretty shiny things ✨ So anyways, this is me and happy to be here and learn all the rocky things. Especially names of rocks! Aside from tumbling, sphere/bead making and intarsia really really intrigue me so far.

Welcome from the PNW! Sounds like you have a lot of fun interests in this hobby. I look forward to seeing some of what you do! I also have many interests and my problem is finding the time! I have done one intarsia piece, at a class years ago. It was fun and I should find time to do more.

Thank y’all for the warm welcome! I have some questions, not sure what thread is appropriate or if there even is one, I’ve explored the forum quite a bit (I might have read the entire thread on Sphere Making in chronological order over the last 4 days)…is there an area in here for the rockhounders, people that procure their own rocks for tumbling? Also, I see a lot of adjectives that don’t make sense to me yet, is there some sort of index of descriptive words/vernacular I can educate myself on? Here or elsewhere. For example: druzy, dendritic, vugs. Obviously I know I can google each word as I come across it, but I’m looking for some kind of list to read over and learn from so maybe I don’t have to pause a video 17 times and google 17 somethings.

Welcome to the forum from Central California rockinronda ! There is THIS THREAD that says it's a glossary but it's not in alphabetical order or anything so would be clumsy to use. It would be a great idea to have one. Maybe you already looked up the terms you listed but if not, druzy is a cluster of small sparkling crystals. Dendrites are actually a form of crystals that usually show up as dark squiggly lines in a rock that resemble plants or tiny trees. A vug is a pocket in a rock that usually has druzy or crystals in it. I would think either the Rocktumbling sub forum or the Rockhounding Reports, Locations, Trips and Shows sub forum would be a good place to post about gathering rocks for tumbling. Also, it's an absolute requirement that you show us pictures of your finds at the Hogg Mine!
