I am still relatively young (going to be 58), but as many of you older folk probably know, I wonder what is going to happen to all my crap once I'm gone. I told my wife that she should log on here and just try to sell it all lock stock and barrel. Well My mind was put to ease as my daughter has taken up tumbling! She has wanted a tumbler for years now (she never said a word to me about it) and her boyfriend got her one for Christmas. It is one of those Nat. Geo knock offs, but it works and came with a decent selection of starter rocks. She is HOOKED! I set her up with grit and a real polish, and some rough and a laminated tumbling guide. She is getting an AR-2 for their anniversary, and either a model B or a Rebel 17 for her birthday. She came over tonight and took stock of all my rough, and grabbed some stuff I had just cut up. She also wanted to learn how to use my slab saw, and is going to take my little Harbor Freight tile saw (I just treated myself to the CabKing trim saw attachment-so no real need for the small HF saw any longer). She has been surfing several online shops, and is discussing what her next batch is going to be. She went through my log book to see how I organize my info and took notes on what I use for clean outs and what not. I told her that once I'm gone, she needs to take all my crap and use it. Now I can sleep at night! Hope everyone has a safe and healthy New Year, and sorry you guys won't get dibs on my stuff.

It's one of those strange dichotomies. We are all sad when each of us pass on, but to know that something that brings us joy that becomes shared with our children is a truly wonderful thing.
It's a form of connection that is deeper than the rocks themselves and knowing it's in the best of hands, is the best kind of legacy
Edit: jokes on you, we got "dibs". You gave us the best gift possible, a great start to the year

Too cool!!!! One of my daughters and my son have a rock interest. If they don't want it when the time comes- DH has my permission to get up with Tommy and sell it here. I would rather they use it, but who can tell the future. I'm not too old, but not the greatest health, either. Whichever way it goes, I know it will go people who will enjoy it.

I'm about to turn 79 and have a significant amount of rough, slabs, cabs and equipment. I have a 40 year old son who lives with me that has physical issues that don't allow him to support himself. I am more concerned with his future financial stability than what happens to my lapidary collection.

This brings up a good point. I think maybe we should make up a form that everyone with significant inventory can keep with their stuff to have for those left behind to give them contact info for people who have the ability to help liquidate the inventory as we all croak. Naturally only the established and proven people would be on the list. But at least the family would have a resource to get rid of the stuff instead of being overwhelmed and tossing it in the dumpster out of frustration.
Story time.
When my grandpa died, my uncle Mike told grandma to wait until he could go through the guns before she did anything. She, much like my mother, did/does not listen. Some piece of shit who knew grandpa had guns came to her when no one else was around and gave her the line about old ladies having guns in the house after the old man dies and how many people break into the house looking to steal them. He conned her out of everything for about $1500. This was a small fraction of what they were worth.
The list of reputable rock dealers may help prevent this from happening to our families.

That is also how valuable stuff ends up at flea markets and thrift stores... the kids often don't know what it is or what it's worth.

Liquidation is something I need to discuss with my son. A collection can either be wholesaled or retailed. Wholesale requires a deep discount. The buyer is looking for the rare and expensive and the rest has little value to them. Retail requires work. He would need to decide if he wants to retail on the web.
If I listed all my saleable cabs it would be close to $50k and would take a decade for them to sell. I don't have an inventory for my lapidary and don't plan on creating one.
