Check this out...it's in your neck of the woods too! www.lapidaryschool.org/After giving it some serious thought....I'm seriously considering taking their Cabochon class. It's a week long! Surely I will learn all there is to know if I spend that much time on it! Also, I will get to try things out before I take the plunge and buy the equipment. If this sounds interesting to you...let me know. I'm eyeing the class they're offering Oct. 3. But may have to wait till later in the month. It's about 2.5 hrs from my house, so I'd probably have to stay there the whole week. They're rates are about the cheapest on the net.

You're in Conyers? Cool!
Hmmm might be 4ish hrs for you. :-( Thereabouts. It's in Young Harris, GA. Since I live off of 575, so the drive wouldn't be that bad.

The guy at the mine (Gary, real nice man) was telling us about that. He said tehy have a package that includes tuition, room and board for (I think) $275.00. Give the place a call. Some students were there that day getting some rocks to cab. Maybe someday.... Let us know what you find out.

I put this on my favourites for later. Looks like a school I might want to go to after we go for advanced jewelery repair and stone setting. Thanks, great lead.

Glad it is of interest to you guys!

Ahh shucks...the way things are going....we're all going to have to coordinate booking a week there and make it a "Rock Tumbling Hobby" trip. ;D
Actually, I was supposed to go to Minneapolis this weekend to see Rob....nice quiet weekend for the two of us, but I think Hurricane Ivan just hosed that idea. They're calling for a "high wind advisory" on Thursday/Friday morning (was flying out Friday morning)
The last time we had a "high wind advisory" , we lost 8 trees in our yard. None hit the house thankfully, but it was a mess. The pines we have in our area are "very" shallow rooted and go over pretty easily when the soil is wet and there are gusts over 50mph. I don't think there will be many flights going out on those days.
Instead, I'll talk to my hubby about taking a week off from work and taking a class there together. We've never been to the mountains when the leaves change, maybe this will be our chance. We're also in sore need of some time together. A week! It would be like a honeymoon! He's also an excellent welder. I would love for him to check out the silversmithing. I'd betcha he'd be wonderful at it. Question is....will he think I'm nuts when I suggest it? ;D

I can see the "wire wrapping" teacher yelling me..The "cab teacher" sending me to "time out"..The faceting instructor sending me to the principal's office...Do they use "paddles" in georgia???

Helen, Youve got to experience the leaves changing up here. I've only been here 5 years and I've never seen anything like it. So many varieties and colors, it;s breathtaking. There is on tree in paticular (can't recall the name) that looks like it's on fire, surreal! Let me know if your coming this way. SHOOT! I forgot to look at the schedule. I'll look on Friday.

Cookie, I've been in Georgia since we were married (24 years) and have yet to get past Canton during the color change. I've heard it's VERY difficult to get a room up there that time of year because it's booked way ahead of time.
I talked to Rob about going...we're going to try and go together...hopefully before the change is over. It would be a first for us!
Otherwise, maybe we can go later...but I can get Rob to join us for a trip to Helen to wade in the hooch. :-)
