I met up with earthdog and his family at the rock show in Des Plaines, IL today. I think it is traditional to exchange a small box of rocks upon meeting a fellow rock-hounder. So I put together a nice box that included a few garnets, a large chunk of hematite, leopardskin jasper, granite, and some other stuff. And earthdog goes and shows me up by giving me a nice mix of agate, onyx, and stuff that weighed almost 20 pounds. What a great guy. He loaded up at the silent auction so you'll have to ask him to post pics. Not a huge show but they had some nice stuff: jewelry, mineral specimans, fossils, and a little rough rock. I picked up a flat of Chinese fluorite: Here is a close-up of the 4 main colors: $23 for almost 4#. I never even knew there was yellow fluorite. The guy at the show seemed offended that I wanted to tumble it.

Lucky you to get to meet earthdog and takila and at a rock show to boot. I didn't know you could tumble flourite, I thought it was too soft to tumble. That's some really pretty stuff though.

One of the vendors there had tumbled fluorite. earthdog and I were talking about it, and thought that you would probably have to start it in 220. But it will be some time before I get to it, have too much agate and jasper to do.

Wow, you went to a rock show and were able to get out of there only spending $23? Man, you showed some real restraint! Nice looking rocks though.

Yep, it was real cool to meet another from the board! Toads wife is real nice, and he has a real cool son. Man I wish I had a son. It's just me and 4 females in the house. It's always that time of the month around here. One of them is always pissy with pms. Thats why I spend so much time in the basement with all my rock toys. While I was there, I met a guy that goes to California hunting for obsidian, and he also goes to Arizona 3/4 times a year. He told me he needs help in feb. when he goes to Arizona and I told him, I'm free to go then. So next year at work lay-off I might go with him. Toad were you there when he came back with the amethyst? Beautiful dark purple stuff. Before we left I talked to him a third time and set it up to go to his house and look through all of his rough rock. I made a bunch of new friends today, you and your family, and Jack the "obsidian man" Takila and Toads wife hit it off pretty good also. We also went over to Evanston to that rock shop, what a waste of time. They had 1 shelf of rough, all way to expensive, even moreso than the Gem Shop. Toad it was great to meet you and your family, we look forward to you all coming up here in July.

There wasn't much rough, that's I got out for only $23. (Plus the 20# earthdog gave me)
Earthdog, yeah I saw the amethyst. But you forgot to tell them about the obsidian. Jack had a piece of mahogoney/snowflake obsidian - in one rock. Pretty cool. July? That's just the triathalon. I want to come up in May for that rock show.

Oh yeah, we are going to that! Takila knows a few great places to eat up there also. We can go to Prime Quarter for steak!

Sounds like you guys had a good time...too bad there wasn't more rough. Sounds like you've got a heck of a trip planned out during your lay-off next year E-dog. Maybe you'll have to visit Utah since I'm MOVING BACK!!! Yeah, another thread for this story. I had my own rock show in my garage today. Got rids of a few hundred pounds of rough as well as over 200 issues of rock magazines. Fatrichie got a heck of a bargain...60 bucks for it all. I figured I'd call and ask him if he wanted it, because I sure didn't want to pack it all back home with me. Steve

If you had to get rid of rough, you know where you can always send it. I'll give it a good home and take care of it all like it was my own child....

nice box-o-rocks, be careful with the fluorite as it goes away quickly

Toad - great finds - collectors are special with their stock - my minerology club always looks at me funny when I ask if I can tumble the stuff - like... "how could you??"
florite is pretty soft but I heard it comes in all colors - & I think rainbow too!

I found it odd. The whole lot is pretty rough, none of them are really display quality - so why not tumble them? Not like I'm taking some museum quality crystals and throwing them in the lortone. Maybe some of these guys have really low standards for display quality.

Sounds like a good show there. I wish I knew about this rock show earlier. Just the previous weekend I was in Des Plaines visiting my mother. It could have been this weekend just as well as the last one. Oh well, better luck next time.
