Thank you all for the helpful responses to the exploding barrel problem. After cleaning everything up, I restarted the batch with a much simpler mix - the 220 grit, one tiny sliver of Ivory soap and 1 Tums. It ran all night and still looks okay. Now, my question is, do I stop and check the progress every 24 or 48 hours, like some instructions advise, or do I just let it run the course for 7 days or so, like other instructions advise? I'd like some input from more experienced folks. The ocean jasper/agate was already looking nice - some pieces have amazing color variations. I took before pictures and if I ever finish this load, will take after pics and send to post. I can hardly wait for the winter storms to start rolling in off the ocean. I live in Los Angeles, California, right near LAX. After a storm, all sorts of interesting rocks show up on the beaches near me. And if I ever have enough time to drive up to Malibu, the interesting rocks are even larger there.

hey there mud. I would think if you have had a problem with gas build up with this load already it might be wise to burp the load once and awhile to be safe. I haven't tried the tums trick yet so I have no Idea if it works for the whole 7 days? If it was me and I had already cleaned up a mess once I'd be relieving the gasses to be safe LOL Happy tumbling HURK. ps it also gives you a chance to see how the stones are comming along for us impatient types ;D

Hi guys, I am a habitual peeker. I nearly have grooves worn in the concrete to the tumblers in the garage. But mostly I peek in the vibrating tumbler, probably 3 to 5 times daily. OK maybe more, my wife is convinced I'm completely nuts . The reason is that you need not shut it down to look inside. One wing nut, pop the lid and sit and watch the action. Pull a piece or two and check the progress. Maybe I am nuts, but it is a happy kind of nuts ;D. The rolling tumbler is different, I only check it every other day or so. It is more difficult to open and tough to re-seal if slurry gets on the gasket. OK I feel better, I confessed. Talk to you all later, Don Rocks, the 'roll your own' hobby!

It does no damage to peek into the bbl. It merely slows the total tumble time and I can check the progress of the grit. LA, my wife's mother has given us an house in Burbank, near LAX and we are definately considering going back to the Granola bars and fruit salads. We both want to go back to the GIA school there for diamond grading, pearl grading and myself for master goldsmithing. On our way from the left coast to Floriduh, my wife commented that nobody could be crazier than LA'ers or Oregonians. Then we hit floriduh. WE be goin home, maybe we can see you there.

Gads, of course you have to peek! How could you not? Out of all the tumbles and the hopper loads I have done, the only time I didn't peek was when I was not in peeking distance. It doesn't hurt anything so why not indulge. This reminded me however, that as I am in Dallas at a conference for the last five days, I turned one of my tumblers off (stage 3) the day before I left...I am afraid I will have a tub of cement when I return. Heh..should have peeked. Be well, Sekhmet
