Nothing that I can tell as impressive as Cher's but hey!
Actually, I didn't get to "rockhound" like normal folk. I was stuck around the hotel for a few days. Wish I had a camera with me. It just so happens that the parking lot had dividers "FILLED" with oodles of gorgeous tumbling material. My luggage was so HEAVY that Rob will end up bringing another bag of rock later this week. (I figure I collected about 20lbs of this stuff. (It was a 15-20 story hotel and it had a HUGE parking lot)
Got to talk to Cher on the phone while I was there, (She doesn't sound funny...does that mean Cookie has a southern accent maybe...or that I sound just as funny as Cher?) and while I was talking and walking I found a Lake Superior agate! I think I broke her eardrum when I hollered! Once I knew more of what to look for, I found about 6-8 more... most are broken...but a few...ohhh....gonna slab these babies!
I promise to take pictures of my finds tomorrow and post it. You won't believe how gorgeous this stuff was....and IN THE HOTEL PARKING LOT EVEN! *chuckles*

"Security, we got a crazy woman in the parking lot, come on"
"Security here, i see her, she's picking up rocks!"
"Does she look like a threat?"
"Negative, she's just nuts, mainly harmless, Security Out"
(unlike the towels, hotels let you steal their parking lot material.......)

LOL Talking to Helen was a real hoot, she's great! Funny thing was, she was in Minnesota, but sounded like she was back in Hurricane Ivan. Talk about wind, she finally had to go back inside the hotel so I could here her. Helen, I'm so glad you found some lakers, aren't they awesome!!! I found a few yesterday, but despite our best efforts, the rain just wouldn't stop so we spent most of the time on the road searching for places to go. Glad you had a good time, hope you'll get to come up again sometime. Maybe things will work out for me to get down there. Helen, I didn't mean Cher Sounded funny, I meant she IS funny! But to a southerner, the accent help make it that much more so. She, I'm sure, feels the same. I sound like a hick! A drunken hick at that. Parking lot treasures, how much fun is that ;D
Security- "Ma'am, put the rock down" Helen- "NO. Finders keepers. It's a universal law. I know my rights!"

cookie when i worked at mental health i had a patient call me from florida very psychotic but aware that he needed to be seen on an emergency basis. he had called the florida mental health and they had given him an appointment a week away. i called the florida mental health and gave my best pleading story to get my patient in quick and the lady on the other end said she would get him in on one condition. i had no idea where she was heading with that and asked what the condition was. she said i had to let her boss hear how i talk. i must sound like festus on gunsmoke or something ;D. anyway i gave them a laugh and my fellow got seen.

You guys are all a hoot! You're right Cookie....she is funny...we were laughing the whole time we were talking. ;D I'm very glad I found all of you. Very few seem to understand my addiction. Lucky for me, Rob does and is as patient as a saint.
Sweetie, I was staying at the Clarion off of France Road/American Blvd.? (In Minnesota) I think it's about 10 miles away from the airport.
"You know you're addicted to rockhounding when you're happy that it's raining out....so you can see the rocks better!"
On Tuesday morning, I found the best of the agates, cause it was a misty rain....enough to identify the rocks....not enough rain to make me uncomfortable.
I was a bit paranoid that someone would stop me. I did "bursts" of collecting...about an hour at a time. That was just enough time to fill my fannypack till sagging....then I'd go back in and empty it...wait 30 min or so, then go back out. I betcha they thought I was crazy...especially when I went out in the icky weather we were having on Tuesday.

Ya'll are too funny! I have this image of a dark figure in a trench coat and hat pulled low, skulking around the hotel parking lot, eyes to the ground, searching, searching, searching. LOL!
And I am so jealous that ya'll have places to find agates. No agates around here - just flint and more flint. The lady I worked for yesterday found a beautiful agate in the driveway of her new house though. I was oh so tempted to stop cleaning her windows and go clean up her driveway of any agates that might be there!

Emerald, I'm interested in something in your first post - "Once I knew more of what to look for"
What is it about agates that made you know they were agates rather than just another rock?
I do a lot of rock hounding on the Lake Superior shore and have yet to find an agate.
Thanks Rhonda

Thanks to this thread I now have added a new excuse to my file..."my fanny's not saggy..it's just the weight of the rocks...yeah yeah...that's the ticket! the rocks! yeah!". oh...fanny PACK! well I'm using that as an excuse anyway.

Rhonda, It took finding the first one to figure out some of the characteristics of an agate. Also, I spoke to Cher and she said to look for something that looked like a potato. :-)

Thanks! I've seen many that looked like potatoes, but never picked them up because, well... they looked like potatoes. I'll know better next month when I go back! Thanks again! Rhonda

Emerald & Scooterin- Thanks a million for the link - very interesting reading. I've seen the 'Is It An Agate' book in the UP a hundred times and never bought it, but believe I will.
After reading the information, I believe I HAVE picked up some agates, but never tried to break them to see for sure. In fact, my fish tank is full of interesting rocks that I picked up on the shore and in looking at it just now, I think there may be a couple.
I really appreciate your help and have got to tell you I LOVE this forum! It's very interesting and informative.
Enjoy your weekends! Rhonda

Emerald I was visiting a friend in the hospital last week (in Texas), and the parking lot there must have the same rocks that you have a picture of...(at least they look the same). And like you, I picked up quite a few and kept waiting for someone to holler for me to get out of there. I've been back, and still have yet to be 'kicked out', so looks like I have a good local supply for now...I'll try and post some pictures soon. I didn't necessarily pick up only 'potatos' (or is it potatoes?.. ), but we ususally refer to them as 'biscuits'....lots of colors/sizes/shapes to choose from..

Today, Rob brought the other bag of rock I collected.....a few agates in there as well.
Several of them are big, maybe the size of an egg. I think I'm going to wait and cut them when I get my saw....instead of breaking them up to tumble. Hope I find goodies inside!
;D

tumble them whole and see how they look, it may help you decide where to cut them
