Hello!;D
Does anyone know anything about the history of rock tumbling?
I have encountered a lot of questions that I haven’t been able to answer while talking about my new hobby. Several kids asked me who invented the tumbler and a some adults casually commented on rock tumbling being an all American hobby???
I've searched all over the web including lots of rock related and tumbler’s manufacturer sites, looking for historical data on rock tumbling without any luck.
I’ve searched online bookstore’s search engines for books related to polishing and tumbling rocks (there are very few of them), to look for the years of publications and the earliest I found were from the early 70's.
I think that maybe older books, magazines or catalogs could provide some photos, or information on these.
Some of the things that I’m trying to find out are:
When and where was the tumbler invented?
First tumblers and their evolution/timetable.
When and where rock tumbling as a Hobby started?
When hobby tumblers first became commercially available on stores and catalogs?
First available brands.
Any sites or museums with pictures of old tumblers?
Rock tumbling trivia?
Something else?
Anyone with the book “How to Tumble Polish Rocks into Gems Book by Edward E. Smith”?
I do not have the book yet, but in the book’s description I found out that the author was the inventor of the Mini-Sonic and the Vibra-Sonic Tumblers and that he has 40 plus years tumbling. If you have the book perhaps there is some interesting historical data as well.
Anyway, hard to find info, I will continue searching in my spare time. Any info or memories on how rock tumbling used to be would be greatly appreciated.
