Ever have one of those days when you feel like the whole world got up and took a stupid pill? On Sundays we have Michael's daughter with us and we decided to spend the day rock hounding in the river. I figured, since Ivan had the river over it's banks for a while there may be some good finds. We went first to the headwaters to a place I've allways wanted to check out. We made some great finds, smokey quartz, rutillated and strawberry colored quartz. We'd been there about half an hour when a family comes into the river, right on top of us and starts to fly fish, casting right over our heads! We decided to go to my "usual" place further up river. A family was there, just playing in the water, mother, father, and 5 kids aout 9 months apart in age it appeared. We went a little down stream from them and hunted for about an hour. Found some good size pieces that sowed potential to be rutillated. We had just pulled off our shoes, rolled up our pants and gone for it, so the rocks were begining to get to our feet. We crawled out of the river, made a pile off our finds, and Michael went to get the truck while Marlena and I did some last minute searching of the rivers edge. When Michael got back we went to retrieve our finds and they were gone. The mother told me her kids had thrown them all back in the river! Can you believe it? What the hell did she think we had been doing for the last hour carefully selecting rocks and piling them up. "Here, we thought we'd give you these special, hand picked stones we've been oowwing and awwwing over so you could let your kids THROW THEM AWAY!" UUURRRRR! OK' got that off my chest. I feel better. They'll be there next time. cookie

sadly, Cookie, you and your family are just window dressing in their world. no one else matters on their planet. just them. they don't think of others, they don't use turn signals when they are driving, why should they? they are the only ones that count, we are all scenery to them. extras in their movie of life.
sorry to hear that you lost a good days find,
KD

no matter who you are or where you live cookie bad manners are just plain bad manners - and just when i was thinking i'm the only one on the planet that draws retards right to me . i was outside admiring our new goat when my mother and child drove up from church. she said their was a man dressed in a suit standing in the road with his vehicle door open then he toots the horn as he drives by my house puts it in reverse pulls in my driveway does a circle (not a circular spot) then drives out into my pasture then out a spot not made for vehicles to enter and exit then he backs up does another circle and pulls into the drive across the street where nobody is. and we're still standing with our mouths open and we wait and wait but he just stays there. my husband is gone for the day so i run in and call another neighbor man and he comes out and gets in his vehicle and drives down to see. they are a good piece off but i can hear my neighbor say "what are you doing" and then a little time passes and the man starts circling my neighbor's vehicle with his vehicle and then pulls back in the drive. then in a minute he backs up and flys away. my neighbor came over looking as puzzled as we were and said the man was talking like a loon and handed me a tag # which i called in but of course he'd disappeared when they got here. i don't know if the man was psychotic, drugged up, or what. so while i'm out trying to clean my rocks i'm scanning the road for the nut and ready to run if i see him. what is wrong with people!! kim

Aww Cookie, I'm so sorry. I don't know what it is with some people, they think the world is there's and ... on the rest. RUDE!!! Just plain rude. I suppose that "mother" (using the term loosely) found it funny and a great convenience as while they were tossing your stuff, she didn't have to watch them. What a horrid thing to do!! For the dumbaxx fisherpeople, I think the only good response is the crazy rockhound routine.
Honey, did you see that fish over there, them's is good eats. No, I don't see the fish. Chuck a 7 pound rock or so into the water!
Oh yeah, I see the fish, it just moved.... chuck another big ole fist size rock into the river. And so on until the fisherpeople get the hint.
Bet those fancy fisherpeople would have moved off right quick.
From one fisherman, who hates it when other inconsiderate fisher people give us a bad name!

AWW, then I would just be stooping to their level. I don't hold it against the fisher family kids or the tourists kids, they were just doing what their "parents" showed them they were intitaled to do. Anything they damn well please. Setting such a good example for these kids to follow in life. This sense of intitalment I see young people with today, like the world owes them something, I'm full convinced bad parenting is the cause. (Says the lady with no natural children of her own.) But I don't let Marlena get away with it, nor does her father (anymore) and she's learning self control, tolerence, and to earn the things you want. By Golly!

Marlena and I went out side with our gogles and towels and whacked our findings. We feel better. She picked alot of those rocks so she was mad, too. "They were rude!" she said. But seeing the wonderful smoke quartz emerge from the stone put it all behind us!

It is a tough old world when having to deal with those inconsiderates. Apart from that you had a great time. Wished I had been there , would have kept an eye on that pile for you Jack

I'm used to people doing similar things, it is very frustrating. The things that most frequenty happen to me are people that come to sit by me on almost empty theathers and restaurants. In this cases I learned that the best thing to get rid of them is to pretend to have the flu, I just snezee and cough until they leave.

Sorry to hear about your rocks, Cookie. The family seems just plain ignorant to me. I mean, think about it. Who in their right mind would collect ROCKS! ;)hehehe To us, they're treasure. To them they're just...well, they're just ROCKS! I've had people look at me rather strangely as they see me squatting and hunched over in the middle of the railroad tracks. Ask me if I care. ;)hehehe. At least the rocks are still there for ya. Go get em next week. ralph

Hello Cookie, You said that you could spit nails ... I could (replace the "p" with an "h" ... It is a shame that people have no respect for anything or anyone anymore. I am sure that you handled the situation much nicer than I would have done. I am one of those people that it takes a year to get mad ... but when I get there ... NOTHING IS SAFE!!! It may have been a test ... you may have had that situation happen to you, on purpose? It might have happened ... to see how you would react with Michael's daughter with you. By your actions, Michaels daughter may have learned a lesson on control, restraint, avoiding confrontation, etc. by being with you on that perticular day, and at that specific moment? It might have happened for a reason ... that we generally do not think about? I agree though, it was blatenly rude and thoughtless. Next time you go rock hunting get one of those boat air horns (comes in a can - and extremely loud ) and when anyone comes close to your stones ... give them a blast! No ... that probably would not work ... because the people would not put two and two together ... it would be like this: Kid throws a rock in the water. You blast your horn. Kid throws another stone in the water. Again, you blast your horn. The kid yells at his parents and tells them how goofy you are ... every time I throw a rock into the water ... she plays music. You, honk your horn again, to get the point across. The kid tells his family that you want more rocks in the water so you can make music ... and the whole family joins in to see if you can play ... Born to be wild. Hope your next trip is better! John

It Was a prozac moment. I kept my cool, but when the lady said "I'm sorry" I said "I wish I could say 'thats ok', but it's not." and walked away. I fumed in silence, but children allawts know. She kept asking "are you over being made yet?" I'd say "Almost, I'm getting better" and finally, when we busted up the rocks I said" I'm OK now" and she grinned and whacked a rock.

nowt like a good go with an eight pound sledge to lift yer spirits, eh?
i did a bit of that myself today, very empowering. these were pieces that i was never going to get in my saw, so at least i got a few saw sized hunks now and a lot of tumble material.
i felt like a squirrel stocking up on nuts before the winter, the days of whacking rock outside here are numbered. but i got a good sweat going today....and maybe a little twinge in the back?

cookie I know it was a terrible experience for you but when I read it I burst out laughing!! I thought this type of thing only happened to me!! Here's the other side of the coin,,,,, Enjoy,,,,, A friend and myself were fishing from his 14' aluminum boat in a good size lake.As the day went on people began to water ski which churned up the water pretty good so we moved to a small, quiet cove where we thought we would have some peace. WRONG!! About 1/2 hr after we got there some nut in a drag boat ,,,(same thing as the dragsteers (cars) but these are boats), backs into the cove and nails it!! The wash almost capsized our boat and we looked at each other in disbelief!!Before our boat settled down the "nut" came back for a 2nd try!! As he lined himself up with our boat my buddy tried to start the motor so we could get the heck out of there before we got blasted again!! You guess it,,,,,Our motor wouldn't start!! We heard the roar of the nuts motor and braced ourselves for another tidal wave!! Vaaaaaaaa Voom,,,,Wooooossssshhhhhh,,,,,,, Yup,,,,,,We were in the water!! My buddy,Bill, was so shocked that he was laughing as we thrashed around in the water !! I WAS NOT LAUGHING!!I can't say what I was hollaring at the nut but you can bet it wasn't good!!I know he couldn't hear me over the roar of his 500+ HP motor with straight pipes but I hollared anyway!! Bill got hold of our anchor rope and we pulled the boat up to shore. We tied the boat to a small tree branch and being exhausted, slithered up the bank looking like 2 beached whales!! After we "recovered" we bailed the boat out and desided to call it a day.We drove to the boat launch and I held the boat while Bill got the car and boat trailer. Now the plot thickens!! As we were loading the boat onto the trailer a young woman in a VERY skimpy bikini stoped to ask if we had caught any fish. She gave Bill and I the thrill of the day as she bent over to look in our bucket to see our fish!! I guess we weren't the only ones taking a "look see" because low and behold,,,,,,,Here comes the nut !! He heads right toward the dirt boat launch, turns and cuts his motor which put the rear of his boat toward shore. Now comes the good part!! Tee Hee Hee!! The nut was trying to get "Miss Bikini's" attention and that he did!!(along with the rest of the crowd at the boat launch) He nailed his motor which created a huge wave that hit shore and got a few of us wet.(wetter inn our case). He let off a tad and the wave he had created washed back off shore and went under his boat lifting it .Just as the wave passed his bow his boat was headed pretty much in a downward angle and the nut nailed it again!! Vaaaaaaa Voooooooooooom,,,Woooooooshhhhhh!! He shot that 60K boat straight to the bottom of the lake!! Bill and I were jumping up and down laughing and shouting on the top of our lungs!! "He sunk the f&^%**g thing,,,,,He sunk the f$**&^*g thing"!! The rest of the crowd looked at us in dismay as we cheered, hooted and hollered!!I guess they thought we were the "nuts" but we knew different!! Even though we got swamped, exhausted and lost some of our fishing gear it was one of the best days I ever had!! God gottum GOOD!! He gottum REAL good!! That was over 20 years ago and as I type this posting I am still laughing !! F%**g "nut"!! Tom
