Do most of you just use hammer-broken rough, or preformed with a saw? Or does it depend on the end use, like jewelry?

Toad, I use a hammer, but only because I can't afford a saw right now. That's the best way to go with bigger rocks. Less waste.

Hello Toad,
I use a combination of both. I guess it depends on what you are wanting to do with them when they are finished.
It all comes down to what you like.
Enjoy,
John

i do both as well, only because i don't have a very large saw! if i can't fit it in the saw, i whack it until it fits. more waste that way, but ya do what ya got to do.....

I can't believe how expensive even the cheapest saws are. Looks like it will be tumbling broken rough for me. Anyone ever break up slabs for tumbling to get some nicer pieces, or is that sacrilege?

I use me big ol' sledge hammer, works great for taking out frustrations. LOL Actually, I don't have a "rock" hammer, what I am using is the flat end of a splitting mall. I like it because it's got enough weight that it doesn't take a lot to break the rocks. I have used a chisel to try and make cleaner breaks which works sometimes, depends on the rock. I'd love to have a saw, I think that's really the way to go but until I get to where I can "hopefully" sell some stuff to get a little return, the saw is not an option.
