I learned the hard way instead of being patient and waiting to get those stooopid pellets that I hate so much. I had carved a little lion cub in a rock, it was soooo perfect, the color, everything. Had spots on the back, nice little round ears, even shaped the eyes and nose into it. But then as ... I fell out of the stoopid tree and hit every freakin branch on the way down ... I didn't wait for pellets "Can we say IMPATIENT" and put it into the 500 grit ... And broke his poor little ear right off ..... i fallen out of that same tree more than a few times, i'm surprised there were any branches left....
that is a shame, Cher, maybe you can trim off the other ear and make it be....an otter or a woodchuck...or...some other varmint that doesn't have prominent ears.

woe woe , "it broke the ear of completely"......head and all i suppose.
Turn it into a Roman headless feature. they are quite valueable and sell on e-bay.
Even with the use of pellets. I suspect this rare disaster might have happend to befall you. I am sorry

Rose, same thing might have happened even if you would have had pellets. An arm broke off my first cross in the prepolish stage and I used lots of pellets. So, don't feel stupid.
It is a shame though. I would have like to have seen your little lion!

Thanks, only here would anyone know the effort that went into it. I might try to take a picture anyway and show you what he looked like before he died. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]

Something similar happened to me but with a different twist; By being extremely patient I learned the hard way that by adding pellets to my first stage it will take me FOREVER to get them shaped! Ha-ha-ha!
A lot of my rocks are still in stage 1 still, I just took off all of the pellets this morning and replaced the 60/90 grit with a 46/70 to see if I could just get faster results and move on. Sometimes too much patience is as bad as too little. ;D

Can you make a seal out of it? They have inverted ears? I really feel for you though, you are right not many people realize what a labor of love some of these projects are. I can spend 6 hours working on a stone and doing the wire wrap and then on e-bay, they want it for $5.oo. These people haven't a clue. It's just time to grab the next stone and begin. I'd really like to see it since I have piles of Green Quartz on my back porch, and it is just the right size for carving and I need some inspiration. What instruments do you use to do your work?

Banjo, what is your ebay ID? I like to look at stuff that people I know have up there. I'll take a picture of it and post it in the member's photos. Don't know how well you'll be able to see the shaping but I'll try. I did all the work on it with my dremel, used only one bit on it for all the shaping, kind of a barrel shaped bit. Hello Cher,
Sorry to hear about your broken ear (well ... not your broken ear ... you know)
It's a real pain in the rear to put so much time into something, just to have it get ruined.
They say that children help build patience ... my son is twenty years ald and I am still having problems with it ... is that normal? ;D
Better days ahead!
John
