Hi Everyone, I'd like to put together a page of rocks for use in identification. There's so many different types, from parrot wing to budstone, it's hard to keep track. What I'd like to do is a before and after pic and I'd be more than happy to give the "photographer/ rockhound/polisher credit for the pics. Just like Andy's forum, which we are all very happy we've found, I think a page of good identifying pics would be great. There's tons of pics of "rough" but I'd like to see something with the before and after pics. I find myself seaching and searching trying to find pics of the different stones I've heard you guys talking about but it's hard. So, get your out and snap some pics. You can send them to me at cher@rosebudm.com. I think this would be great, especially for newbies. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]

Cher, that is a great idea and I know it would sure help me identify some of my stuff. When I go to the rock shop, I always seem to spend most of my time in the agate bin. Get alot of neat agates, but don't know what most of them are. I would say probably a good many of mine are Rio Grande or Laredo Agates because they are only $1.00/ lb & at that price, I buy a lot of them. I do sometimes venture to the expensive agate bins = $2.00/lb. These are agates from places other than Texas, but they all look the same in the rough whether from Montana or Texas. I have been able to identify alot of my rocks after they come out of polish because of pics posted on the forum, so a whole web page would be GREAT!!
Going to BE's to cut rocks Sunday afternoon, so will take the camera and snap some pics of rocks in the rough before and after being cut, then a month later, after being tumbled.

Llana, that would be great. See you just mentioned Rio Grande or Laredo Agates and I've never heard of either. Not to mention, Prairie Agates, Bubblegum Agates, Lake Superior Agates, Mexican Lace Agates, Botswana, Brazilian, Condor, Dryhead, Fairburn, Queensland, Bluelace ... etc. Who the heck ever knew there were so many different kinds of agates? I don't know, this might be an undertaking of massive proportions but I'd sure like to give it a try. I think it would be extremely helpful and I appreciate your help. H Cher, Here's a fantastic site on just about all the agates of the world. I've used it for identification myself. I hope this will help you with a great idea. csd.unl.edu/agates/agatepage.aspTom

Wow Tom, that is a great link for agates, thanks. It's definitely in my favorites. I'm not looking for just agates though, I'd like to do as much as I can. Like Puddingstone, jaspers, hematite, whatever you guys have tumbled. A picture in the rough and a picture polished so if your out looking, you have sort of an idea what to look for. Like the Apache Tears, I would never have known how they looked rough. The only thing is you need to know for sure exactly what they are. Hello Cher, That sound like a great idea ... I am not the best photographer ... but, I'll send some your way! Oh my ... where to start. One thing you are going to run into ... is the specific name for a respective material. Why ... Materials (agates, jaspers, petrified woods, etc.) are sometimes named after a geological point of interest ... such as Owyhee Jasper. It comes from the Owyhee Range in Oregon ... the only problem is that there are many different kinds of Owyhee Jasper. Some are named after a specific location ... such as Richardson's Ranch Agate (from Texas) ... now you might find the exact same kind of agates ten miles away that might be called broken arrow agate ... so the name of a specific material can differ greatly. Your idea sounds great, if I can be of any help, other than photo's ... let me know. Have a great weekend, John

Thanks John, any help will be greatly appreciated. ;D Oh boy, LOL this could be more that I ever imagined. The main thing I do want is accuracy in identification. I guess it doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it's properly id'd. Maybe adding a note that the stone is similar to another rock? Or maybe not? I've been trying to think of my layout for the pages. Think I need to go bust some rock and give myself time to think about it. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img] PS ... Just wanted to add that I'm not looking for just "exotic" stones. I think having common area stones would be good too, especially for newbies. Again, as long as they can be accurately id'd. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a general location for them either. I don't want to get as deep as they are like on the link for the agates. Just mostly pictures, but I want to make it worthwhile too.

Hi Cher...I work with a PhD geologist who keeps saying things like "dalmation stone? how quaint...that's actually chaldefonicalfrajalisticite" (she's pretty lucky I don't up and smack her actually). But she might be able to point me in the way of the scientific names too so if that'd be a help, just let me know and I'll be nice to her and get them for you.

Some one might want to post a pic of leaverite. As in "leave her right where you found her, just a rock." ;D
I GOTTA get a camera.

;D ;D ;D LOL Cookie, I didn't think I'd found any of that stuff yet but I was out "bustin rocks" today and dang if there wasn't a couple pieces of that in my bucket. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]

Your idea is just GREAT Cher! As you know I'm just starting at this but I'm actually taking pictures of the tumbling rocks in the different stages and will continue to do so. As soon as I start to finish my first batch (they are in pre-polish)I will be able to share my pictures with you if you find them useful My future batches hopefully will include better known rocks! GREAT IDEA CHER!!! ;D

Just about anything that we tumble I guess. Whatevery you guys think. I'm sure you all had to start somewhere and have the same problems us newbies have. What is that stone?? And probably where'd it come from or where can you find it. Like some of the stuff that Em and Cookie just found in the "hooch". We don't need to get specific, but could just put Georgia as a "found in" location. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]
