I made a little suggestion on the photo board about getting together for a little group crystal dig at Mt. Ida which seem to have gone over ok.....so here are the details as I know them. The Wegner Mine in Mt. Ida, Arkansas will allow groups to go to their mine site and dig. As far as I know they will provide transport to and from the mine for the day. The cost is $20 per person with a $200 min. for the day. There are no restrooms or anything at the mine site. I was told by Wegner that a regular car can not make it to the mine itself...but someone with a truck could drive their own vehicle there. Something to think about. There are several motels in the area. One I stayed at is the Crystal Inn and is $50 a night. It has microwave and small fridge. ...and a resteraunt too. You will also find a lot of rock/crystal shops in the town and area...(hmm..imagine that). The town is small but very nice with good shopping. If you are intrested, give it some thought and also check them out on the net. www.mtidachamber.com wegner@ips.net There is another mine for $20 a day with NO MIN. requirements and they do have a restroon on site. That is Gee's and Dee's. Let's give this a little thought and see what developes....and if this does not work out we might think of getting together as a group and go rockhounding elsewhere......... I'd say Jan, Feb, Mar time frams gonna be a little cold up in the mountians. I'd suggest May or June or even first part of July. Added info...digging for crystals in that area is gonna be VERY dirty work. It's red clay and it sticks to everything...so you would want to bring along some digging clothes you would not be upset if it got dirty beyone cleaning......

"diggin' clothes", yep, kinda like "eatin' clothes" (expanding waistband). BearCreek has his own line of cuttin' clothes....
Emerald has cargo pants?

I am all for the idea... I've been pondering an expedition to North Carolina sometime next year for some digging... might as well add to the list...
Anywhere between March and June would probably be best... don't want it to be too sunny, and burn everyone, nor too cold and have icicles dangling from one's eyebrows...
It's definately a workable idea, and we have time to get it all organized and together... I like it.

Hi Billy.. Yeah..I like June too...and I also have been giving NC some thought...there is an emerald mine out there I would love to go visit. I saw on TV one night something about opals and gems in Utah..northern part somewhere. Expensive ...$100 a day to dig..gonna do a little more research on that one. Let me know if and when you decide to head out to NC...may have a chance to go with ya.

NC works for me. Now that my hubby is addicted as well, he'd probably love it. There's an emerald mine in NC I've heard good things about. I'll have to go back through the threads and look. That would be fun!

Hello Pho! That's just a great idea! At this moment NC sounds a little too far away for me but who knows if by that time things could change. Sounds like fun fun fun to me! ;D
