Morning to all,
I am trying to learn more about where to look for new spots for rocks etc....such as agates, geodes etc.
I know it all has to do with volcanos and glaciers. I have found some good sites on these happens in BC, but where do I want to look? Right where the volcano was? At the bottom of it? 100's of miles away? Also do I want to look where the glaicers were? Where they receeded too? Where they last were a glacier?
ETC, you get the idea I hope. We actually at one time have like 15 volcanos in BC, and it was all glacier at one time according to some maps I found on the net.
Thanks for any help Bunny

Hey BC, here are two books I recommend: "Gem Trails of British Columbia" by Cam Bacon and "Gold, Gemstone & Mineral Sites of British Columbia - Volume II" by Rick Hudson. Both are excellent references for finding various rocks/minerals, and also include maps of the different areas. I'm sure you will find both very useful.
I live in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island and do most of my rock hounding at the ocean. Fantastic finds here! If you're ever out this way give me a call and we can hound together!

Hi guys! I'm in Calgary. I've been to the rockies and not found much - all grey stone. Next time I'm in BC I'll have to visit the beach.
However, I've found good stuff in my front yard where we put down rock for landscaping - lots of nice quartzy stuff.
I'm going to take my son to a landscaping supplies place (Burnco) on the weekend to see what they have in their various types of gravels. You can buy pretty cheap from them.
I've also hunted a bit in places where they are digging to build new homes. Sometimes I find neat stuff.

Hi Skipper, Any snow in Calgary yet? I am slowly finding more and more places to look. I take lots of notes when ever someone says something, I mark it down, hahaha I have great memory just real SHORT. The local rock club has been a great outlet too for information, as have meet lots of wonderful people though its meetings and outings. It is such a big world out there and I know there must be WONDERFUL places out there to collect rocks that no one has even been to yet. I would love to find some of those places. ;D Bunny

Hi Skipper and Bunny.
I lived in the Edmonton area most of my life, then moved out here to the Island last year. Sort of a retirement, for me anyway. Ha Ha. Hubby goes back to Alberta to work, poor ol' boy. Anyway, we're heading for Alberta next week to see family and friends..and hubby to work in Red Deer for a couple of weeks. I'll probably be driving back to the Island myself and if it's not snowing/raining I'll spend a day in the Merritt/Hope area as that appears to be a good place to hound. Bunny, what part of BC do you live in? If it's not to far off the beaten path, perhaps we could get together to compare notes. Do you do any gold panning? That's another interest of mine, as well as wood carving.
