Hello everyone!
I'm new here and know NOTHING about rocks.
I have a question for you all....
I have some interesting river rocks that I would like to make 'shiny', like the rocks you can buy at craft stores for fountains, etc. Any ideas on what to put on the rocks to make them shiny or is it just done by tumbling them?
Thanks KJ

Well tumbling is the most fun! But sure...if you just want shiney, you could wax them...you could dip them in polyurethane...lots of things. If fact, if they're in a fountain they'll look shiney just because they're wet. But tumbling...man...it's the best...it's like the smell of a good ham in the oven...you know it's going to take forever...but when it's done? it's gooooooood.

Hermatite
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I don't have a tumbler and with all my other hobbies, I can't afford one right now although I have considered it. I sandblast small river rocks with designs and having the non-blasted area shiny makes the blasted area show up more. I am looking for a way to do that without too much more expense.
Thanks again for the reply.

I have spray polyurethane. On soom pieces I have that are thinly slabbed, I been cheating a little and spraying them. They seem too fragile to tumble, but I'm going to try.

HEY!!! NO SHORTCUTS HERE....Rocks just gotta be tumbled..not sprayed.... OK...just an idea here...You might want to make some trade with some people..you know...you send them some rocks to be tumbled and do some sandblasting in return....I am sure someone here will work something out with ya on that.....Just thinking out loud ...
