Hey all, I've been lurking for some time. I got my daughter a tumbler for a birthday present a couple months ago and we've been having a blast experimenting. I'm hooked. I'm about to leave for a 7 month deployment to Iraq and I'm bringing along a new(leaving the daughters at home) tumbler and some supplies to keep me occupied. I want to tumble (Thumbler AR-2) only two types of rocks, hematite, and tiger eye(golden and blue). I leave in about a month so I'm putting in the order this week. My question is what is the best polishing media for both of these types of rocks? Any other advice on these types of rocks would be greatly appreciated.

I will pray for your safe return.

jc i 2nd what toad said! i have not started my hematite yet so i cannot say what works for it. this chart suggests cerium. www.utahrockhounds.com/tooelegem/tips/stonepolish.htmli have used titanium oxide on the tigers eye with great results but the last batch i did i had a piece that wasn't polishing in the titanium. i swapped it over to tin oxide and it was breathtaking. cerium might work but i myself haven't tried it on the tigers eye. kim

Hi JC, Welcome to the forum and I'd like to THANK YOU also for the service you are doing for our country. I'll contact you through the forums instant message service, I can help you out with some hematite. Be happy to send you a few pounds that I've picked up locally here in NE Minnesota. Be warned, hematite, being iron ore makes a heck of a red mess when your working with it and can take some serious scrubbing to get it off. Good luck in Iraq. I am not one of those who thinks anyone who goes is a criminal. My hopes will be with you as well as everybody else at risk doing a job that is and will be very challenging. I believe, what you are doing is necessary, dangerous, and I hope you NEVER get treated like I did when I came back from Viet Nam. I know you will miss your daughter, and family. Perhaps they can join the forum and we all keep posted. With hematite, and tiger eye. Conventional tumbling grits and cycles should be adequate. Both are minerals of iron and respond well to corundum. I did well with aluminum oxide polish on tiger eye. Same with hematite.
While in Iraq, look to your feet. You might find some unconventional stones to add to your tumbling inventory. Good luck, may you find peace there.

JC, see my recent (past few weeks) post for the tiger eye (in Members Photos) i just finished. i did an intermediate step with the SISA and used the tin oxide and thought it came out as one of my shinier batches....
i've never done hematite, so i am no help there.
stay safe over there, my deep felt thanks to you for your sacrifice and my sincere hope that you will return safely to your family with duffel bags FULL of exotic rocks from a faraway place.
the bright side might be the dam sand over there might be free grit!
keep us in your thoughts as we will be thinking of you, KD

hey JC,
Welcome to the board, buddy. Try the standard three stages of silicon carbide grits plus cerium oxide polish. Please stay safe, you'll be in our prayers. Thank you for your service to our country and to all of us. PS let us know if you find any cool Iraqi rocks!

Hello JC,
My family would also like to thank you for you and your families service to our GREAT COUNTRY. It's because of people like you ... that we are able to live life as we know it today. You and your family will be in our prayers.
I know of a man that just came back from Iraq, and he got some Marble chunks that came from one of Saddam's Palaces.
Stay safe and again, THANK YOU!
Sincerely,
John
