Gy-Roc Model 'A' 10 pounder... I bought 3 extra hoppers. So my loads will do 60/90 in the Lortone QT-12. Then 220/600/Tripoli/and Polish in the Gy-roc. I also got the lapping plateto do some of my thunder egg halves and misc. geodes. Now I just have to clear all the rock from my bench so I can put the tumbler on it...

Great! Keep me informed as to whether you like it or not, as I've been wanting one for a couple of years. ;DS

Ok, the extra hoppers is a nice touch.
I still have not rigged a color to put the plate I have onto my Model-A. Let me know how the action is and maybe I will do it sooner.
Hey, any chance I could get a xerox (or PDF) copy of your manual? I would gladly send a few nice slabbetts for you to polish.

Daniel, it didn't really come with directions. Just a xeroxed page of very confusing (to me) grind stage instructions. Nothing on setting it up - not that it was that hard to figure out where the belt went. By the way, when I have the belt on the small pulley does it go faster or slower than the big pulley. Probably a silly question, but I don't want to think tonight.

Some of the money I was planning to use at Quartzite/Tucson this year. But decided equipment was more important right now. You must have been VERY good last year!

Here are some alternate directions that Ismike sent me:
I have owned 5 brands of vibratory and Gy-Roc is the best, hands down.I do not have the lap for my A but do have advice.IGNORE the written instructions as to water and fill level.I worked out a different usage with Lionel at Tagit. As with other vibes ,start with damp rock-i.e., drained.Fill level, very important:fill it right to the top, run it, (lid on!) for just 30 seconds or so and the load will settle. Now fill it again with small stuff. you may even have to re-fill again. What you will see is rock moving and slightly bulging the lid. There are three advantages to this method:1.itworks!2.it is MUCH quieter3.the A is nominally a ten pounder, but my loads are about sixteen. More tips nly use distilled water as minerals in hard can screw-up the polish and I only spritz in a little water when the slurry gets sticky. This has worked well for me for ten years.Oh yeah,Tagit calls for the slower speed for the polish run,but if your belt is streched out from use go with the higher.Buy extra belts! One more thing:I recently bought some 800 A.O. for use in my big Raytech. As an experiment I did a one day run in the Gy-Roc between 600S.C.and polish.I got a great polish in one day! After trying many polishes I now use only Reynolds A.O. Poly Al- F (.2 micron).I hope you find this useful.Mike

The smaller pulley is the slower speed because it is on the drive end. If it was on the driven end, the bigger would be slower.
I generally turn the unit off and gently turn the pulley with my fingers while I use my pointer finger to gently nudge the belt up or down to where I want it. While it is turning slightly it just needs a nudge - kinda like a bike chain shifting gears.

are you the 1st one to get one of these toad? i don't recall seeing anyone else show theirs. i like how you can make it into a vibrating lap too. tall pan too so maybe stuff won't slosh out. if it does get some press and seal wrap and just seal it on top.

I hope you'll keep us updated, particularly on the vibrating lap plate. I have been accumulating more and more big slabs and faced-chunks of various lapidary materials, and how to eventually deal with these (ie polish them) is still quite a mystery to me. -Don

The best part of this is that the lapping pan fits right on top of a hopper. So I can be tumbling a load while the lapper is going. Lid is not a problem either. Take the lid off the hopper, put the lapper on top of the hopper, and then the lid goes on the lapper. No muss, no fuss. Now I just need warm weather. Daniel has 1 or 2 of these that he got off eBay. are you the 1st one to get one of these toad? i don't recall seeing anyone else show theirs. i like how you can make it into a vibrating lap too. tall pan too so maybe stuff won't slosh out. if it does get some press and seal wrap and just seal it on top. kim

Todd - Do you have to take the lid of fto put the pan on? Whenthe stones roll over and hit the lid is is loud enough - like drums. I would hate to think of a metal lid.

Yep, looks like the lid has to come off. Didn't think about rock vs. metal before. Maybe that isn't such a good idea... Todd - Do you have to take the lid of fto put the pan on? Whenthe stones roll over and hit the lid is is loud enough - like drums. I would hate to think of a metal lid.

i know yours is different than mine but in my lot-o-tumbler my rocks don't hit the top so i'm thinking yours won't either. have you started it up yet?
