Greetings All, I saw this at harborfreighttools, a bit pricey but oh I bet it would make short work of the boulders I have that I can't figure out what to do with! www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=46935Home Depot sells one for a lot more money...I wonder if they rent them? If so this could be a great weekend project... WilliamC

let us know how it goes. it looks similar to the "thing" they used on my blue brazilian agate but ours had a more pointed chisel. whatever kind of tool it was it did the trick where i could not even get a chip out of the thing for months and months.

Oh that is so wicked cool. Really all I want is a decent crack hammer... but POWER hammer...yeah yeah...I can see how that would come in handy!

Wow, Stoner, I have a compressor. Might just have to get me one of those air hammers!
However, the last tumble sized stones I got didn't come as a result of a hammer of any kind, or from a saw. I mowed the lawn for a friend of mine the other day and accidently (Really! I didn't see them!) ran over two rocks that turned out to be some of our beautiful local flint. Naturally, I had to pick up the broken pieces. I didn't want to run over them again! I wouldn't recommend a lawn mower as an acceptable way of breaking rocks, but I sure wouldn't want anyone to overlook any pieces accidently hit while mowing!

Greetings All, I only ended up buying one of the three QT12's I was bidding for on Ebay, so that frees up enough cash to go to HomeDepot today and rent the rock hammer. I'll let yall know tonight how things went. Wish me luck WilliamC

Hey BE. I hope that wasn't a power reel-type mower! I used to have one of those and would always end up running over a dead bird or mouse that the cat brought home. And the rocks really hurt! Those air hammers work well, but they require a lot of cfm, so a small compressor will be running constantly.
William C-do you still have two feet? How'd the jack hammer work?

WilliamC, that's gonna be a serious rock bustin' session! Just how big are these rocks you're bustin' up? Must be some BIG suckers if you gotta use a jack hammer!!! Keep your toes outta the way and let us know how it goes. And, as always, pics if you got them! ;D llana

Bird, who the hell said anything about fat women and what difference would it make anyway? Sheesh!
I don't know that there are any fat women on the forum, but that remark was quite uncalled for. Why would a fat woman with a jack hammer be a bit worse than a fat man on a jack hammer. I have seen a good number of fat men on a jack hammer and, believe me, it ain't pretty with their pants hanging down below their protruding bellies and their crack hanging out the back. I'll bet the farm (if I had one) that a fat woman on the jack hammer would NOT be flashing her crack to the world.

Greetings All,
I ended up renting a smaller hand-held power hammer instead of the jackhammer, it was obvious that I wouldn't be able to control the two-handed jackhammer well enough to avoid breaking the concrete on my driveway. With the power hammer I had mixed success. For the carnelian, verdite, and the autumn and koi jaspers the rocks were either too hard or too dense for the hammer to break, it just tended to pulverize them into dust or pieces too small to be useful. Maybe in a quarry this would be ok but I don't want to waste so much of my rocks.
However for the butterjade the hammer worked pretty good, it tended to fracture the boulders into several smaler pieces after the bit penetrated just a short depth. I busted up 5 or 6 boulders into pieces that are small enough for trading and breaking further with a regular hammer to tumble-size chuncks. So I ended up returning the hammer after 4 hours, and only spending about $40. But it made for an exciting afternoon, my son had a lot of fun watching (from a safe distance and wearing the spare pair of saftey goggles of course). Best of all it was a learning experience, I learned that I REALLY need to buy a rock saw, hammers just offer no control over the size and shape of the pieces obtained.
