Hello everyone, It's been a while since I have been on the board. I figured that some of you thought I was dead or something. I got a large cab cutting contract (14 days at 16 hours a day) and trying to keep up with eBay, 15 baby ducklings, and cutting cabs for jewelers ... well, I have been just a little swamped lately Is it break time yet? I will be checking back in from time to time ... I just wanted to say HELLO. Take care, John

It's so nice to see you and know that you're well. The good thing about the board is that it's always here when you come up for air. Good luck with the contract.

John, are you hand grinding or have you made a machine? Do you hand polish or tumble the cabs? I tend to cut the cabs with the shape of the stone as reference, a cabochet. I do not do very many but I do make custom mountings for the stones I do. I saw an automatic machine a gentleman made. Kinda neat to watch. He also used aluminum dops rather than wood.

Hi John Happy to hear about your contract, sorry it's wearing you out though. Hope you can pop back in and let us know how things are going with it. How many cabs can you make in 16 hours? Cher

Hey everyone,
I'm checking in ... and boy am I behind!!!
Rocky - that was supposed to be 14 days at 16 hours a day ... if this wasn't my own company I would complain to the labor board ... or something?
Sandsman - Oh no, I dop all of my cabs! It gives me much more control over the stone.
Doc - I hand cut every stone. I have see the cabbing machines that produce mass quanity cabs ... but, it can not even get close to the quality I can cut by hand. If you ever need any stones cabbed ... let me know!
Cher - In a given 14 to 16 hour day ... with slabbing the rough, orientating the cab/stone (figuring out what looks better for a pendant, ring or a necklace) and trimming and cutting the cab and then finishing it on both sides ... it averages between 10 to 15 finished cabs, a day. Sometimes more and sometimes less ... depending on the material that is being cut at the time.
I just finished a new roof on the chicken coupe (have to keep them chickens and little (not so little anymore) ducklings warm! Re-finished the roof on the house (replaced a bunch of shingles) and trying to get everything done before winter sets in ... well ... I have just been swamped!
Most of the cabs that I have finished so far have already been shipped back to the customer. I never took the time to take photo's of them before they went out the door. I know ... I really should have done so.
Well, take care and I'll keep checking back in.
Enjoy,
John

WHAT?? No pics for us? No eye-candy? Sounds like your getting caught up on some important stuf tho, like keeping them little critters warm. That's a good thing. Hope it settles down for you soon. Cher

John, my wife and I are opening our shop this weekend. We have an entire quarter of the shop we are going to dedicate to us on the forum and the other few we might meet. We do not want quantity, we want a few stones that stand out to the artist. We want to be able to show a resume' of the artist, a photo. It is an unique fleamarket in that the previous owners of the fleamarket turned it into a garage sale fleamarket. The new owners want to have year round vendors who are unique, want to succeed, and are professional. It is the ground floor for us to really root in, succeed, help others, and show something different. We are finishing the Other room, the quarter set a side. We are going to call it, The Other Room. I am going to post a thread when we are ready. I know what you mean between the difference between machine calibrated cabs., and hand cut cabs. There is no comparison. Even second hand cuts are better than machine cut first quality. No comparison. Great luck hope you get a break soon. Doc
