ok i finally got done with some of my Garnets and i had found some amethists with them in the final stage. I cleaned them off and than put them in Borax for 2 days and took them out. I cleaned them off real good and the Garnets got a really nice shine but the small amethists that were in there did NOT shine at all. Could anyone tell me what i did wrong. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks: Vanessa

i've never tried garnet, but i think they are harder than amethyst....those garnets (MOH ?8)acted like grit to your nice purple numbers (MOH ?7), try again with similar hardnesses......
help out there with you guys that do REAL hard stones?

Thanks KD Those Amithists found their way into the tumbler not sure how. I think one of my little ones put them in there by accident when i was checking them. Can I put the Amithests with Quarts or do i need to put them in, in there own. Like Amithests alone and Quarts alone or can i put them together.

I believe amethyst is a form of quartz and you should run them together. I'm doing some that I have run a couple of times, this time with flint and picture stone. They finally took a shine, but got chipped. The next run will be the amethist and quartz toghether by them selves. Welcome Venessa, by the way ;D

I agree - run amethyst on its own.

FYI - most garnet is 7 to 7.5, maybe the 7.5 stuff is scratching up your amethyst...
