..this was designed to be? It was among some belongings that Christa's Grandmother had willed to her when she passed several months ago. Very neat old cabs (unfortunately the smaller one is cracked in two places) It looks for all the world like it's supposed to be a ring.. Except.. it's HUGE! I guess I could understand it if you were holding a sword in the other hand LOL! Any thoughts on what it might be?

When I saw the first picture I was thinking belt buckle. But then saw the ring on the back so was stumped. It obviously has been used from the wear on the edges, so maybe a odd bolo?

Hmm Bolo.. that could very well be. We had talked about it and it might have belonged to her Grandfather who passed many years ago. Thanks for the input Mark.

It does look like something that would have held a neckpiece--such as a bolo. I saw something similar that was used to hold a scarf loosely in place around the neck.

I'm with Lady B on this one. I'd say it's a scarf ring, probably from the 1960s.

It could actually be a ring, big, yes, but things like that go in and out of style regularly.

i'd go with a scarf ring, too. some 330 clear epoxy discreetly on those cracks might be in order.

It's really cool! No stamps on the back? Did the Grandparents live in AZ too? Or did they do some travelling?
If it were mine...I think I'd try finding a picture of someone perhaps wearing it? Spread the word through the family to keep your eyes peeled when sorting through pic's.
About the cracked stone. I know lots of people use glues to cab & such...but because it's more like a family heirloom, I would be reluctant to do anything to it. It might be nothing more than a beautiful silver thingy with beautiful turq. stones set in it...OR...it could be a handmade sterling silver piece of native american artwork by someone famous (hey...it could happen!) and be significantly reduced in value if something were done to it.
At any rate...what a wonderful thing to be given!

Thanks for the input everyone! We're leaning towards the scarf ring idea, but still it's any body's guess. That's a great idea Liz about going through old pictures to see if we can spot it being sported. There's lots of pics! Btw.. her grandparents came to AZ sometime around the depression era from Texas I believe.
