I dove deep into the rock tumbling hobby recently, and have just purchased my third Model B. I also have a Lortone 12 lb'er, which gives me 4...one for each grit.
I do the typical "scrub the piss out of it between each grit" but I didn't remove the rubber liner from any of the Model B's until about a month after purchasing the first one. When I did, I was aghast. There was considerable corrosion on the inside of the metal housing. Thumler did not apply the nice red enamel to the inside!!! IT'S JUST BARE METAL.
SO, I just couldn't stand it. I used some Rust-o-leum Enamel to coat the inside. Hopefully no more rust.
Beware: You MUST scrub the inside with alcohol or paint solvent and let it dry thoroughly prior to painting. There's some kind of oily stuff on the rubber, and the paint won't stick if you don't remove the goo.
It seems a shame that they go to so much trouble to produce a nice tumbler, then leave bare metal that just gets nasty...maybe it was an odd lot.

Thanks for the tip. I just got a model B but I got extra liners and gaskets for each grit. I'll look inside the barrel next time I change the grit to see if bare metal is exposed.

With a rubber/ferrous contact point, adding a chemical coating as a preserver can have the opposite effect. In using rustoleum instead of conventional oil paints, no deleterious effect might be enacted. Rustoleum is a fish oil base rather than mineral oil. Latex base is better. I prefer a finished product however sometimes longevity is enhanced by leaving a weather front. Unless there is a leakage with a saline or other chloride, oxidation is not usually increased. I think I would have done the same thing. I like my tools right.

I got them at Kingsley North. www.kingsleynorth.com/tumblersr.html They ship quickly, they have good prices and they carry just about everything you can imagine. I highly recomend them! You can find the barrels/gasket kits listed under the thumbler model B tumbler picture.

How is the rust doing now. Has the rust stoped since you paited it?

I am pleased to report that I don't seem to have any corrosion issues since painting the inside of the rollers, and it's easier to remove the rubber liner and scrub out the funk as well. I hate rust...
