I've been an amateur rock geek (on and off) for over twenty years. I never heard of pet wood before. Can you all fill me in on what it is? Where is it found, composition, hardness, etc...
Thanks much.

and found just about anywhere and everywhere. Here's a pretty neat page that tells about it's make up. I knew there was such a thing but never really knew how it was made. Petrified WoodCher

An interesting site Cher , I read the whole page. Now I understand too why the pet-wood in our area is so BLACK. Southern New Zealand is known for it's black pet-wood, in NZ

Now I'm torn. I feel compleely stupid for not realizing that this was just an abbreviation, but I feel better that I did actually know what it was. I thought it was some newer mineral like charoite.
Thanks for clearing that up.

I figured you just missed the abbreviation No cause to feel stupid, I'd love it if there was some new material known as pet wood!

I thought it was a favorite stone, like teachers pet. Anybody remember pet rocks in the 70's?

I was concentrating on the 'pet' part of pet wood and gave myself brain freeze.
I wonder if the person (genius) that thought up pet rocks knows the person (freak) that thought up chia pets.

petrified wood is the state rock in mississippi. if you have to have volcanic ash to get petrified wood wonder where ours came from because we don't even have good hills much less volcanoes . kim
