The diesel engine, designed by Otto Diesel in 1898 was originally designed for using cooking oils. The emissions are actually lower. Todays diesels have been modified to use petroleum and have emissions controls specific for diesel fuel.
The larger monster diesels can use alternate fuels more easily. When they use organic oils they produce less light carbon. I do not know if they use used oil, however if they did, the accumulated emissions would be less. The fuel return line actually heats the fuel in the main tank, liquifying any dense oils, and fuels, making a blended fuel. The alternate fuels burn, and leave a dense carbon which bonds to the lighter carbons and brings them to the ground instead of staying in the atmosphere.
If they do burn vegetable oils, they are doing the environment a favour. In England, the government actually has a sniff squad. This is a department of public safety function. Their job is to sniff out vegetable oils used in diesel autos in England. From what I have read, store clerks have to report excessive vegetable oil purchases.
One the one hand, vegetable oils lessen the environmental impact, on the other hand, vegetable oils diminish oil purchases, and produces less tax realization. Sufficient reason to incorporate social control.
I am deeply infavour of emission controls. Our world looks large when we look out of our window however, it gets real small when we produce more chemical emissions than can be absorbed and converted.
