the manual with this genie says oil leathers and bearings after 40 hrs of use with 30 weight motor oil - will this 3-in-one oil do?? or do i need to get actual motor oil and how would you get that down in there where that screw comes out?

Get the non-detergent motor oil. It is better than multi viscosity for what you are doing. Less expensive also. 3-N-1 oil is not motor oil. It is oil based but it has different additives. It will run off easier, and has some penetrating solvents. Ace and Walmart has non-detergent oil, so does NAPA.

Thanks for asking that question, Rocky, i haven't got to 40 hours yet, but was almost tempted to oil it anyway...(if some is good, more is better).

for little lortone tumblers, like 3A and 33B, can WD-40 work for oiling the shafts and motor?

Don'y over oil your leather or the oil will leak down on the small belt that drives the air pump and make it slip. You can always add more oil but it's hard to get rid of it. Tom K

WD-40 is designed to displace water (thus the WD part) so if you wash something off and want to keep it from rusting? WD-40 is your thing. But I wouldn't rely on it to lubricate gears and motors it might appear to work for a while but you'd develop some serious seizing after a bit I think.

WD-40 is not an oil! It is a rust displacment solvent. Hermy is correct. It can act as a penetrating oil, but it is more of a kerosene rather than a lubricating oil. I do understand, kerosene is a petroleum product, thereby oil, but the case in this is lubrication.

Less is more. Keep an eye on the bearing surfaces. That will tell you when you need more. Oil lubricates, and it helps carry heat off the contact area.

The cup to be oiled has a little lid. When you let it go, it will snap closed. The bearing surfaces are where the shaft goes into the arbor. You will not see the bearing but you will see the oil residue. As long as there is some, there is oil in the bearing. The bearing will wear most at the pressure points. The belt tension is the most steady pressure on the bearing. It will wear most against the belt pull. You need the belt to be adjusted properly or it will either slip or fall off. A tight belt pulls.

what cup? what snapping lid? i only saw 2 screws with red paint on them (they did that to help us dummies). it said to remove the 2 red painted screws and put 1 drop in one to oil the leathers and in the other to oil the bearings. i don't see any cups and snapping lids.

birdseed, are you saying you can use the cooking olive oil to oil tumblers? that seems weird, but if it works.. why argue?

Do not use cooking oil. It has the same properties as WD-40, and kerosene. You can use it in a diesel but it will really be a poor choice for lubrication.

Olive oil is best on most Italian cooking..Sometimes I use it on salads...Olive Oil was Popeye's part- time girlfriend when she wasn't messing with Bluto..
Never use Olive Oil on bearings..

Seriously: Oil your bearings one time and do not repeat unless there is a serious demand..ie-squeeking etc...over oiling is the #1 problem of belt dysfunctioning....as far as the quality or appropriateness of various oils--Like doc said -but for WD-40 there is no major differences...
