Kim, I've really been wanting to make wind chimes with rocks, but I was thinking of using one of the same stones for the top with holes drilled in it for the fishing line to hold the matching chime stones. I have some stones polished and waiting for this project. But I haven't drilled a hole in a rock yet, so I'm waiting until I get the nerve.........er, I mean, more appropriate equipment to drill with. ;D
Can you post a pic of an example of a windchime with what you're looking for? I don't understand exactly.
Good luck with your windchimes!

OK, saw the site so NOW I understand! Cool looking windchimes! But I have no clue where to get the wooden rings. I would make my own. You can do it, Kim!

barbara look at the 2nd link up above and you'll see that round wood thing at the top that they drilled the holes through. the fellow i talked to today said it's about 3 in. in diameter - i was thinking it was bigger. here's a link where they used a larger agate slice at the top and did what you are talking about. www.angelfire.com/ks/amazingrocks/agw1901.htmlso at least if i can't find the round wood things i have another option - might like to try both and the driftwood ;D. kim

Off topic, but I always wanted to find some old welding gas bottles (the 5 foot tall ones) and cut the bottoms out and make a giant set of windchimes using a plywood paddle and a weight off a set of barbells for the gong...they would sound neat. I can imagine drilling the holes in the Agate...I ruined 5 diamond drills trying to drill through some ocean Jasper. Anyone know how the ultrasonic drills work...I cant imagine how the drill all those holes through the chips and beads you see at places like the rock shed.
PS Kim, you need to go to Hobby Lobby and buy a large embrodriey hoop they have sizes all the way out to 30 inches across. Dwight P

my drilled slices got here last week and i went to our local craft store (walmart : and got what i could to work with. no little wooden rings like i wanted but i found some other things to get me going. i have sanded the wood cutouts i got, and put 2 coats of polyshades (stain and polyurethane together) on one side, now have to let that dry and do the other side. got the dremel bits to drill the holes in the wood, the fishing line and the key rings. in the meanwhile the ones i bought pre-made so i could get a good look at how this is done are hung all over my husbands deer head with the ceiling fan on high so i can see and hear them ;D. that deer is looking good - you know your a redneck when...... poor deer gets a rudolph nose at christmas and party horns all over his antlers at new years - he gets no respect lol. kim

but it did give me the idea to get some whitetail tines and drill holes and hang them from them - waiting on hubby to bring me some - he doesn't seem in a rush.
